Rapid City Medical Center is seeking a Medical Records Specialist. This position is responsible for assembly of information, file, retrieve and deliver medical records as assigned. They are responsible for managing medical information requested by outside parties or agencies. This clerk maintains the confidentiality of the patient’s medical record.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains the confidentiality of the patient’s medical record.
- Handles walk in patients with their request for records.
- Identifies corrections within paper-based chart and electronic Medical Records and delivers to proper employee so the changes can be made in all areas within computerized Medical Records.
- Places any patient alerts about Record Release authorizations on patient ECW account.
- Routes charts or records to other doctors or areas as requested.
- Reviews release of information requests for completeness and proper authorization.
- Copies records and mails or faxes copies as per the request for information.
- Communicate effectively with patient when providing release of information.
- Faxes information for continuing care after verifying identify of requestor.
- Maintains PHI Disclosure Inventory of information released within electronic record.
- Records charges for records on receipts for patient and Business Office.
- Answers telephone, handles calls appropriately or directs call to appropriate personnel.
- Request charts from warehouse by researching documentation and warehouse logs.
- Sorts, distributes, or names and attaches faxes that are received. (Fax Inbox)
- Transfer, name and attach records from MR scans folder to patient’s ECW folder.
- Files loose paperwork to shelf for scanning.
- Maintains and loads paper and toner for copier and fax machine.
- Runs Credit Card settlement report nightly and send to Business Office daily.
- Troubleshoots for fax machine and copier when problems occur.
- Performs closing duties nightly. (lock shred bins and lock doors)
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: High school degree or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: Previous experience working in a medical records department desirable, but not required. On the job training is provided.

Office setting, well-lighted and ventilated, adequate space.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to walk, stoop, bend, and stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to work with frequent interruptions.
