Principal - Process Research Chemist – Lithium Extraction and Conversion
The Principal Process Research Chemist is an influential and visible role that will lead all aspects of process chemistry development, improvement, and optimization for the Company. This individual will conduct scientific investigations, perform advanced modeling, conducting lab experiments, characterize outputs of unit operations, work closely with process engineers to scale-up processes, and conduct experiments in pilot plant.
Our client is a critical minerals refining company based in Houston, TX. The Company is developing a novel, environmentally clean process to produce battery-grade lithium chemicals, aluminum, and silicon from lithium ore. The Company is building its first refinery in Southeastern Arkansas.
Responsibilities.
• Identify, evaluate, develop, and optimize process chemistries to meet Company’s needs.
• Design, plan, and execute laboratory experiments, analyze data, and interpret results.
• Understand and communicate the macroscopic and microscopic phenomena of the chemistry in each unit operations including reaction kinetics and electrochemistry of cell membranes.
• Synthesize and analyze the behavior of inorganic and organometallic compounds.
• Work with process engineers to scale up processes from lab scale to pilot scale.
• Conduct process development experiments at laboratory and pilot plant scale.
• Identify, engage, execute, and manage experiments with partner third-party labs.
• Actively seek to develop intellectual property.
• Build productive research collaborations with strategic external partners (e.g., academia, national labs and other industry partners).
Requirements.
• PhD in Chemistry or equivalent degree.
• Experience in at least one of the following:
o Chemical synthesis in a research setting;
o Process chemistry conceptualization; or Process chemistry experimentation and characterization in lab-scale and pilot unit operations.
Skills.
• Strong analytical, communication and collaboration skills
• Strong skills in chemical characterization and experimentation/synthesis
• Experience with lab-scale and pilot-scale operations.
• Inorganic and/or organometallic synthesis.
• Materials /Molecules / Structural Characterization.
• Kinetic model development.
• Strong foundations in chemical thermodynamics and electrochemistry is very desirable.
