What are the responsibilities and job description for the JROTC INSTRUCTOR position at Rapides Parish School District?
FLSA: Exempt
QUALIFICATIONS:
Certified by the appropriate branch of the United States Armed Services as set forth in the appropriate regulations
REPORTS TO: School Principal
SUPERVISES: Cadets
JOB GOAL: To plan, direct and evaluate the learning experiences of each cadet through
appropriate instruction, leadership and guidance, resulting in better citizens
TERM: Nine Months
SALARY: Nine Month Teacher Salary Schedule
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Instructional Responsibilities
A. To establish learning objectives, immediate and long range, with written minimum, daily
lesson plans, which shall be available in the classroom. Planning shall provide for
systematic growth in fundamental knowledge, skills, appreciation and attitudes.
B. To teach effectively
1. Using class time for teaching designated subject matter as outlined in JROTC Program
of Instruction Manual
2. Using a variety of techniques to stimulate learning
3. Using a variety of curriculum materials
4. Differentiating assignments to meet individual needs
5. Explaining assignments
6. Evaluating the pupils’ learning frequently using a variety of techniques including
teacher-made tests in order to improve teaching and learning
C. To maintain an atmosphere in the class conducive to learning
D. To demonstrate an understanding of child growth and development, showing respect for
every child and an enjoyment of working with students
E. To exhibit substantial knowledge of subject matter and the curriculum and program
objective
F. To maintain control, promote self-discipline, character and respect for others through use
of positive control techniques in keeping with state law, armed service policy, board policy
and school rules and regulations
G. To use orderly procedures for normal control in all learning activities
H. To teach according to the Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching (See Appendix A)
II. Administrative Responsibilities:
A. To follow the rules and regulations of the assigned school and the appropriate armed
service regulations
B. To follow a time and/or duty schedule authorized by the school principal for the school day
and extracurricular activities
C. Have non-duty personnel report to the school ten (10) minutes before school begins and
remain ten (10) minutes after school closes
D. To sign in and out using the school designated time clock/form
E. To be in the assigned classroom or other area of responsibility when the class period
begins, never leaving a class unsupervised
F. To remain at school during the school day unless permission is obtained from the principal,
or for short duration (one to two hours or less) absence for the conduct of school business
as previously discussed with the principal
G. To be responsible for attending any administrative and/or professional meetings called by
the principal
H. To notify the principal or designee in case of absence
I. To account for, secure and supervise the proper care of all school and armed service
property issued to the JROTC department
J. To be neat and accurate in completing required records and reports and submitting these in a timely manner
K. To follow guidelines as set forth by the Rapides Parish School Board
L. To maintain an attractive classroom
M. To be responsible for all cadet training away from the school campus
1. Obtain prior approval from the principal
2. Get written consent from parents/guardians
3. Make certain the trip has educational value related to the JROTC program
4. Properly prepare the pupils for the training exercise and conduct an after-action-
review upon return
5. Be sure that all private vehicles have public liability insurance and that all drivers
are properly licensed
6. Assure that trips are adequately chaperoned and that pupils are properly supervised
by the JROTC instructor and chaperones
7. Assure that all cadets/students are picked up, upon return, by parents/guardian or
authorized person, before the JROTC instructor leaves
III. Professional Responsibilities:
A. To exhibit enthusiasm and self-confidence, assuming a positive attitude about the
possibility for growth and development of all cadets
B. To maintain good public relations, making positive contributions to parents’ understanding
of cadet’s progress
C. To be ethical in contacts with parents and other community representatives, fellow teachers and cadets
D. To participate in faculty and system-wide inservice programs, taking part in appropriate
workshops and conferences and reading current professional literature
E. To be loyal to the administration of the school system, the school and the appropriate
armed service
F. To establish and execute a professional growth and self-evaluation plan in accordance with
the Rapides Parish School Board Personnel Evaluation Plan
IV. Personal Responsibilities:
A. To observe standards of conduct inside and outside of school, demonstrating integrity and
dependability, setting a desirable example for pupils and avoiding any violation of school
rules
B. To set a good example for pupils by wearing the appropriate uniform properly, and being
well-groomed within the provisions set by the appropriate armed service and the Rapides
Parish School Board
C. To use language which is void of vulgarity, lewdness, coarseness or profanity
D. To maintain self-control and poise
E. To be in good general health with the vitality to perform the duties of an effective JROTC
instructor
F. To enunciate clearly in a pleasant, controlled voice, expressing ideas clearly, employing
good English usage
G. To demonstrate the ability to adjust to new situations, showing control and effectiveness
under pressure, demonstrating a mature understanding of problems
H. To accept responsibility commensurate with assigned tasks, meeting obligations to cadets
and staff on time
I. To be in attendance at work except for personal illness or emergency as defined by the
policies of the Rapides Parish School Board
