ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Training & Development:
- Conduct classroom instruction covering vehicle operation, safety procedures, passenger assistance, and route navigation.
- Provide hands-on, behind-the-wheel training, including pre-trip inspections and defensive driving techniques.
- Evaluate trainee performance and provide constructive feedback.
- Develop and update training materials as needed.
- Conduct remedial training for operators needing additional support.
- Assist employees in converting CDL permits to full CDL through road, pre-trip, and skills test preparation.
Administrative Duties:
- Maintain accurate training records, including attendance, evaluations, and licensing information.
- Schedule and coordinate training sessions to ensure resource efficiency.
- Manage and track operator certifications and licenses for compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and submit reports on training activities, compliance, and operator performance.
- Maintain an inventory of training materials and equipment.
- Assist in developing and implementing training policies and procedures.
- Stay current with industry best practices and regulatory updates.
Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure all training activities adhere to DOT, FTA, and state regulations.
- Conduct return-to-work, post-accident, and refresher training sessions.
- Promote a culture of safety and professionalism among trainees and operators.
- Perform vehicle inspections and report any maintenance needs.
- Assist in developing and maintaining safety programs.
- Act as a resource for employees and departments regarding safe bus operation.
- Serve as backup to the Safety Officer and report during inclement weather or emergency events.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Conduct operator evaluations and ride-alongs to assess driving performance.
- Collaborate with operations management to address performance issues through training.
- Assist with interviewing and assessing operator candidates.
- Perform other duties related to Safety and Training as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge:
- Thorough understanding of the Durham area, GoDurham routes, service policies, and fare structures.
- Knowledge of transit operations and related federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations.
- Familiarity with CDL training requirements, defensive driving techniques, and commercial vehicle operations.
Experience:
- Minimum of five years of full-time experience in public transit training.
- At least three years of CDL driving experience is required.
- Experience in a supervisory or leadership role within fixed-route services.
- Strong administrative background, particularly in training documentation, scheduling, and compliance tracking.
Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to prepare and present detailed reports on training activities and operator performance.
- Strong interpersonal skills for coaching, mentoring, and performance evaluation.
Physical & Mental Demands:
- Ability to work assigned hours and complete required tasks as scheduled.
- Valid North Carolina CDL with passenger (P) and air brake endorsements.
- Strong ability to concentrate, interact professionally, and work under stressful conditions.
Mental Demands:
- Ability to listen, reason, think, concentrate, and interact with others.
- Ability to exercise self-control and work under stressful conditions is necessary, particularly in employee relations situations.
