What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substitute Teacher position at Rawhide Youth Services?
Job Purpose:
Effectively manage educational programming and student behavior in the absence of the classroom teacher. On days when a substitute is not needed, support the education program as directed and assigned by the principal by following the expectations established by the classroom teacher, monitoring student progress, providing academic and behavioral support and serving as an additional resource to the education team when not substitute teaching.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Promotes a positive work environment by maintaining a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to learning; modeling personal behaviors of honesty, fairness, courtesy and consideration; maintaining a cooperative relationship with administration, staff, students, and other Rawhide personnel.
2. Directs the development of students by maintaining the same classroom expectations as the regular classroom teacher; promoting high levels of achievement in relation to individual abilities; utilizing techniques and methodologies appropriate to student abilities; monitoring student learning; exhibiting personal interest and encouraging student interest in subject areas.
3. Evaluates and reports student performance by communicating with the regular classroom teacher on student academic engagement and behaviors; recording daily scores; conducting MAP testing when not subbing.
4. Contributes to program effectiveness by maintaining high expectations for students; allowing regular teachers to be absent without a drop off in classroom behaviors or academic engagement; providing instruction aligned with school curriculum and state standards; collaborating with classroom teachers to support student learning; maintaining an ongoing program of personal professional growth and development.
5. Supports the residential program by supporting individualized learning plans for students that are congruent with residential treatment plans; relating and intervening with students in way that is consistent with the residential treatment plans.
6. Maintains safe and clean work environment by maintaining written rules of classroom behavior and expectations; providing for the health and safety of students in all instructional settings.
7. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by identifying and requesting to attend professional workshop activities intended to increase the teachers instructional effectiveness; completing required trainings; reviewing professional publications; maintaining Wisconsin state teaching license; establishing professional networks.
8. Protects the credibility of the Rawhide mission by developing and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships; complying with the Rawhide standard of conduct and team norms; setting an example, in words and actions, that is consistent with the values and beliefs of Rawhide.
9. Contributes to team effort by utilizing your individual talents to supplement and support educational programing at Starr Academy; actively participating in weekly team meetings and 1 on 1 meetings with the principal; performing other duties as directed or assigned by supervisor.
Essential Job Functions:
- Fill in for classroom teachers when they are absent
- Maintain classroom expectations and academic engagement when subbing
- Conducting MAP testing when not subbing
- Utilize your talents and interests to supplement the academic programming Support the on-campus work opportunities and community service programs
- Reporting academic and behavioral progress to the teacher upon their return
Job Qualifications:
- Valid Wisconsin Substitute Teaching License
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Desire to work with at-risk youth
- Ability to contribute to a strong team environment
- Prior teaching experience or experience working with at-risk youth
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to the needs of the day
- Ability to de-escalate youth including the use of therapeutic physical intervention when needed
- Ability to lift 50lbs
