Job Summary for RN applicants : Provides professional nursing care within the Emergency Department; coordinates care planning with other disciplines. Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care. Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs of patients, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. Communicates with ED physicians regarding changes in patient’s status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas: Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care. Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the general patient population. Uses triage process to ensure timely and appropriate care to patients. Accurately assigns triage categories. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret the results. Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately. Ability to perform waived testing (point-of-care testing) per Clinical Laboratory’s and the patient care unit’s policies and procedures. Ability to interpret the results of waived tests; takes appropriate action on waived test results. Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition. Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Prepares, hangs, monitors and discontinues IV fluids. Maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses and assessment of changes. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality. Emergency Room experience preferred. • Current BLS Certification. • Current ACLS Certification. • PALS within six (6) months of hire. Purpose: The PRN staff will be utilized to cover staffing needs, which are not covered by the existing part-time and full-time staff.
The PRN pool will consist of PRN staff that work in areas where 12-hour shifts are scheduled but can at times be utilized in other departments. Definitions: • PRN (pro re nata): as needed Procedure:
- There are two (2) available options for PRN staff:
1. PRN 1 (one) requires a commitment to sign up for 3 (three) shifts per month. One (1) of these shifts must be a weekend shift (Saturday or Sunday) and one (1) holiday per yea2. PRN 2 (two) requires a commitment to sign up for 6 (six) shifts per month. Two (2) of these shifts must be a weekend shift (Saturday and/or Sunday) and one (1) holiday per year. • PRN staff will decide upon hire which PRN option they prefer.
- PRN staff will collaborate with their supervisor/manager to sign up for required shifts.
- The supervisor/manager will be responsible for making sure the requirements are met.
- PRN staff will not be eligible for standard employee benefits (i.e., vacation accrual/worker’s compensation).
- PRN staff are eligible for worked Holiday Pay.
- Any PRN staff inactive for 90 days will automatically be removed from the PRN pool.
- PRN staff will not be scheduled over 64 hours per pay period without prior approval from the supervisor/manager and/or the Chief Nursing Officer.
- PRN staff will receive a written evaluation annually.
- PRN staff will NOT be eligible for a merit increase each year at the time of evaluation.
- The PRN hourly rate will be established by the Administration.
- PRN staff are required to complete orientation.
- Any nurse requesting to be of PRN status who does NOT have 1 (one) year of experience or more will require a longer training/orientation period.
- To change options on the PRN pool, you must have written approval from your department supervisor/manager and the Chief Nursing Officer.
