Role Overview
The SALT Specialist is responsible for managing state and local tax compliance, developing strategies to minimize tax liabilities, and addressing complex tax issues such as nexus, apportionment, and tax credits. This role requires a deep understanding of multi-state tax laws and regulations, as well as the ability to assist with audits and filings across multiple jurisdictions.
Responsibilities
Tax Compliance and Reporting
Prepare and review state and local tax returns, including income, sales and use, property, franchise, and excise taxes.
- Ensure accurate and timely filings across multiple jurisdictions, adhering to varying state and local regulations.
- Monitor legislative changes and regulatory updates, assessing their impact on compliance processes.
Nexus and Apportionment Analysis
Analyze nexus implications for businesses operating in multiple states to determine tax filing obligations.
Tax Planning and Strategy
Identify opportunities for tax savings through credits, incentives, and exemptions.
Audit and Controversy Support
Manage state and local tax audits, acting as the primary point of contact with taxing authorities.
Technical Research and Advisory
Conduct in-depth research on complex state and local tax issues, including legislative developments and case law.
Technology and Process Improvement
Leverage tax software and automation tools for compliance, data analysis, and reporting.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or related field.
Experience
3 years of experience in state and local tax compliance, planning, and controversy.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in tax software such as Vertex, Avalara, ONESOURCE, or similar platforms.
