Position Summary:
The Import Compliance Specialist will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with the Lacey Act and other U.S. import regulations. This position will focus on collecting, verifying, and documenting required information to support legal importation and supply chain transparency. The ideal candidate will have experience in import regulations, data validation, and cross-functional collaboration with overseas vendors, freight forwarders, and internal teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lacey Act Compliance Management:
- Collect and review Lacey Act declarations, including plant species and country of harvest details, from suppliers and vendors.
- Ensure all imported furniture meets the Lacey Act requirements and is properly documented before U.S. Customs filings.
- Maintain up-to-date records of Lacey Act compliance data to support audits and internal reporting.
- Vendor Communication and Coordination:
- Liaise with Asian suppliers and manufacturers to gather accurate and timely Lacey-required information.
- Train and educate vendors on compliance standards, document accuracy, and submission deadlines.
- Follow up on incomplete, delayed, or inconsistent data submissions.
- Data Verification and Documentation:
- Verify species names, country of harvest, and other critical supply chain data against documentation (e.g., invoices, packing lists, shipping manifests).
- Cross-check Lacey declarations with other import compliance documents to identify discrepancies.
- Maintain organized records for all import compliance activities in both electronic and physical formats.
- Import Compliance Support:
- Assist with U.S. Customs documentation, classification, and record-keeping to ensure furniture imports comply with CBP (Customs and Border Protection) regulations.
- Work with the logistics and trade compliance teams to streamline import processes.
- Monitor changes to the Lacey Act or other applicable laws to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Reporting and Auditing:
- Prepare compliance reports and summaries for internal stakeholders.
- Support audits related to Lacey Act compliance and U.S. Customs inquiries.
- Develop and implement corrective action plans as needed for non-compliance.
Required Qualifications:
- Understanding of International Trade, Supply Chain Management, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Import compliance, U.S. Customs regulations, or supply chain management is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of the Lacey Act and related U.S. import requirements for wood products.
- Experience with furniture imports or similar commodities preferred.
- Proficiency in working with import documentation, including invoices, packing lists, and declarations.
Key Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills for data verification.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for vendor coordination.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with ERP systems is a plus.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines.
- Knowledge of CBP regulations and other trade compliance requirements is an advantage.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or other relevant certifications.
- Experience working with Asian suppliers and knowledge of international logistics.
- Familiarity with sustainability practices and documentation for the timber industry.
