RECORDS/DETENTION TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION
Tasks related to the booking and care of inmates include, but are not limited to, the following: production and maintenance of arrest and criminal incident records, dissemination of information lawfully to the public, police personnel and other city departments, handling correspondence and statistical reporting, filing, storage and proper care of permanent records, and providing service and assistance to the public; to ensure inmates are properly and correctly booked into and out of the detention unit; and to ensure Raytown state warrants, stop orders, missing persons, and other computer entries are properly entered.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Detention Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
1. Booking and care of inmates, production and maintenance of arrest and criminal incident records, dissemination of information lawfully to the public, police personnel and other city departments, handling correspondence and statistical reporting, filing, storage and proper care of permanent records, and providing service and assistance to the public.
2. Operate and maintain municipal jail facilities; inspect the facilities regularly to maintain security and good repair; act in compliance with all operational, safety and maintenance procedures; act in compliance with all legal regulations relevant to the operation of a detention facility, including health codes.
3. Act in accordance with policies and procedures for the maintenance of building security, health of its occupants and disposal of potentially hazardous materials; and maintain appropriate record-keeping procedures.
4. Storage of police department records; maintain familiarity with all regulations and laws related to records retention, reporting, dissemination, privacy and destruction.
5. Operation and maintenance of all office equipment and machinery in the Detention areas.
6. Operate the department mail system and the internal written communication systems, including dissemination of memos, maintenance of bulletin boards and wanted notices.
7. Participate in the employee training program.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Operations, services and activities of police detention units.
Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation.
Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
Basic principles and procedures of record keeping.
Polices and procedures of Tips Hotline.
Polices and procedures of fingerprinting and mug shot photography.
Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
Occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions.
Operational procedures of police records computer systems.
Operations, services and activities of the city.
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
Laws governing the care and custody of arrested persons.
City personnel policies and procedures.
Ability to:

Efficiently work within the records and property management system.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Two years increasingly responsible experience in clerical and/or detention assignment is preferred.
Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Associates degree preferred.
License or Certification
Possession of an appropriate, valid Missouri driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions:
Office/detention environment; exposure to computer screens, jail, inmates and potentially dangerous situations.
Physical Conditions:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time; general manual dexterity; lifting and carry moderate to light objects.

Pay: $19.45 - $28.12 per hour
