Job Description
The successful applicant will provide geotechnical engineering support for engineering design activities for infrastructure projects throughout Alaska, and possibly the Lower 48, to include buildings, utilities, roads, airports, etc. Under the supervision of a professional engineer, the individual will lead geotechnical field explorations, perform geotechnical analyses/calculations, and prepare geotechnical reports to support the design team on a wide variety of projects. The individual will work on a multi-discipline team of engineers and may also help with other disciplines such as civil, structural, and hydrology/hydraulics. This position will require some travel for field work to remote locations across Alaska.
Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, geological engineering, or a closely related field
- Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam
- Good technical writing skills
- Ability to plan and execute field explorations in remote locations across Alaska (and willingness to travel to remote locations in Alaska for field work)
- Course work in geotechnical engineering, such as soil mechanics, rock mechanics, seismic engineering, and foundation design
- Ability to work independently and effectively collaborate in a team environment
- Ability to use hand tools in the field, such as shovels, hand probes, rock hammers, and picks
- Comfortable working around heavy equipment in the field
- Knowledgeable of and willingness to follow all safety protocols
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
Preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree in geotechnical engineering or a closely related discipline
- 1 to 2 years experience in geotechnical engineering, including geotechnical field work, laboratory testing, creating borehole logs, slope stability analysis, and writing geotechnical reports
- AutoCAD/Civil 3D experience
- Experience in other related engineering disciplines, such as environmental, civil, structural, hydrology/hydraulics, and surveying
- Engineering experience on Alaskan projects
