JOB TITLE:
Childcare Center Director
DIVISION: Administrative
REPORTS TO: RFYP Executive Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Childcare Center Director provides and coordinates the necessary support, resources, supervision and leadership to ensure the provision of nurturing care and education to young children in a group setting. The Director shall ensure services are provided in accordance with the goals and curriculum developed for the childcare center in addition to the policies and procedures for the Center. The Director will ensure all requirements, licensing needs and reports required by the Iowa Department of Human Services, and any other State agency, are completed and filed appropriately. The Director will report to the Executive Director. The Director will complete all necessary duties and responsibilities to ensure a safe, efficient and healthy childcare center.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide leadership to the childcare center to ensure the mission, vision, and values are carried out.
  • Thorough understanding of childcare center daily operations and management of staff
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations, computer and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge and implementation of Iowa childcare guidelines and state licensing
  • Comprehensive knowledge and proven success implementing programs for children based on developmentally appropriate practices
  • Maintain, at all times, high quality childcare standards based on developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the operation of the childcare center.
  • Assure consistent compliance with all Iowa Childcare Licensing Minimum Standards and other inspections.
  • Coordinate the annual licensing of the childcare center
  • Oversee the maintenance of files according to requirements.
  • Attend professional development seminars to maintain an understanding of the current best practices of curriculum and administrative functions of child development programs.
  • Oversee the training and professional development of all childcare staff.
  • Maintain open, consistent and effective communication with parents, providing parent education training, assistance and support as needed.
  • Accepts and respects differences in children, parents and coworkers
  • Provide reliable, accurate and timely information about the childcare center to interested parties.
  • Ability to manage a budget in collaboration with the Financial Director
  • Responsible for all other duties deemed appropriate, necessary or assigned by the Executive Director and/or Board of Directors.
Experience:
  • Three years experience as a classroom teacher of young children.
  • Two to four successful years’ experience managing child care center.

Education/Certification:
  • Associate’s degree in child development or related field.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain certification through the Iowa Department of Human Services as a Child Care Director.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have a high school diploma or have passed a general education development test.
  • Must have work experience working with children.
  • Must have work experience supervising and leading the work of others.
  • Must be able to maintain a high degree of efficiency in changing from one task to another and establishing priorities.

Physical Qualifications
  • Position requires constant lifting, twisting, stooping, bending, squatting, kneeling and reaching. Pushing and pulling may be required. Frequently exposed and subject to changes in temperature and humidity, vapor, fumes, odors and infectious disease conditions.
  • Must be able to routinely lift 30-50 pounds.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise all staff of the child care center, including substitute staff and volunteers.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:
Must be able to operate computer and other office machines such as fax, calculator, telephone, etc.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Occasional district wide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours, frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
May be called upon to work overtime or odd schedules. Typically works in an office setting, although may be called upon to work in the classroom. This position requires proficient organizational and communication skills. Must be able to perform several tasks at one time. This job requires the individual to be able to read, write and communicate with a diverse set of staff, children, youth, and parents/guardians.
