Description

Under the supervision of the Program Director of Youth & Student Wellness, the Intervention Specialist shall serve as a support for school-wide mental health/wellness by providing direct services, consultation, and outreach to youth experiencing substance use/abuse or other forms of behavior, detrimental to personal, social, or academic success. The Intervention Specialist also serves as a liaison between local schools and community resources and will work to provide information and/or crisis intervention services. The Intervention Specialist will work collaboratively with school sites to promote a positive school climate with a focus on mental health prevention, intervention, and case management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Assess and address behavioral, mental, and socioemotional needs of referred students by gathering input from teachers, individual histories, and interdisciplinary team observations. Develop and recommend appropriate intervention strategies.
  • Meet with students at school sites to provide counseling, conflict mediation, and holistic support, equipping them with tools for self-regulation and emotional growth.
  • Collaborate with parents by offering consultations and education on behavioral and socioemotional discipline strategies to enhance support at home.
  • Design and facilitate workshops for diverse audiences, covering topics such as LGBTQIA advocacy, mental/behavioral health, substance use prevention, and restorative practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate intervention progress through follow-ups with students, parents, and school staff.
  • Establish and maintain effective, customer-focused relationships with school staff, representatives of other agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain an appropriate work pace to ensure timely and efficient completion of responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with resource navigation, IEP processes, and student advocacy.
  • Represent IS/RO in external committee meetings and community events working towards enhancing youth social emotional well-being and increasing access to youth services and resources in the community.
  • Conduct additional observations to assess the effectiveness of behavior support strategies and provide feedback to teachers and administrators.
  • Provide direct mental health services, including individual and group counseling, light case management, and coaching, to students and families.
  • Serve as a liaison with school personnel, community agencies, and other organizations to coordinate referrals, resolve issues, and exchange information to meet student goals effectively.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed case records, progress notes, and reports while ensuring timely data entry into designated evaluation systems. Maintain confidentiality of all sensitive and privileged information.
  • Attend and actively participate in meetings, workshops, and training sessions to strengthen community partnerships and stay informed on best practices in youth intervention and support services.
  • Engage in Reach Out’s equity work through active participation in DEI initiatives, ensuring all services are delivered with trauma-informed care and equity-focused approaches.
  • Provide translation support for documents and verbal communications, if fluent in Spanish.
  • Collaborate with Reach Out departments on events, projects, and assignments across the Inland Empire.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to meet program needs.
  • Consistently engage in Reach Out’s equity work for the agency, with interaction at the DEI
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Required Education: Bachelor's degree or near completion of degree in Psychology, Sociology, or related Human Services field.

 

Preferred Education: Master’s degree in Social Work, Pupil Personnel Services, or another related Human Services Field.

 

Experience: 2 plus years of working with youth in an academic or other youth setting. Experience must include working with a diverse group of youth from various academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and self-identified groups. Identifying the best to meet the needs of individual youth. Familiarity with group dynamics and individual guidance based on needs. Ability to provide an environment conducive to youth learning and empowerment.

 

Preferred Experience: Fluent Bilingual Spanish/English.

 

Knowledge of:

 

  • Behavior intervention strategies and techniques
  • Applicable laws, codes, policies, and regulations related to assigned activities.
  • Principles, practices, guidance, and techniques related to mental health counseling and behavioral health for school-aged children and adolescents.
  • Conflict resolution and group dynamics.
  • Crisis management and intervention techniques.
  • Experience with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
  • Professional writing skills sufficient to write reports and correspondence that may be sensitive and require concise communication.

 

Ability to:

  • Implement social-emotional learning strategies, restorative practices, violence prevention, mentorship, and peer education.
  • Ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and with diverse youth populations.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports, documentation, and other written materials.
  • Facilitate group sessions using designated curriculum and engaging participants in additional topics or interventions.
  • Exercise sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines.
  • Use tact when addressing sensitive, complex, or confidential issues.

  • Mathematical Skills - Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. 
  • Physical Demands - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand, walk and use their hands to complete various tasks. The employee is occasionally required to react quickly with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. 
  • Work Environment - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is infrequently exposed to extreme outside weather conditions.  The employee is infrequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. On occasion the employee could be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as found in an office environment.
