Manager of Surfacing

Reports to: Vice President and Assistant Vice President of Maintenance of Way Job

Overview: The Manager of Surfacing will oversee all the equipment track surfacing activity (tamping/regulating) for the MOW department. This individual works closely with the Division Leaders, AVP’s, and VP on developing surfacing plans and ensuring jobs are completed efficiently, safely, and within the agreed upon scope of work. In addition, this position has the responsibility of ensuring the proper maintenance and repair of the surfacing equipment, as well as assisting in developing appropriate operator training schedules/competencies. During the slower season, this individual will assist the track crews with other track maintenance initiatives as deemed necessary.

Responsibilities and Duties:

· Directly oversees the work production of all Tampers, two (2) Regulators.

· Develops surfacing plans for the Main Line, Branch Lines, and system Yards.

o High Rail ahead of equipment to determine surfacing needs.

o Complete site visits to monitor progress.

o Follow-up behind equipment to evaluate results and monitor any QC needs.

· Reviews surfacing plans with Division Leaders, AVP’s, and VP.

· Communicates with Operators on a regular and on-going basis.

· Coordinates directly with the AVP.

o Ballast dumping.

o Track outages.

o MOW crew and police assistance.

· Works directly with the Mechanical department on equipment repairs and scheduled maintenance.

· Develops training schedules and competencies for trainees and current equipment operators.

· Other duties as appropriately assigned.

Qualifications

· General operational knowledge of the tracking surfacing equipment preferred (not required).

· Experience and maturity level to effectively communicate with multiple individuals and other departments to ensure overall objectives and goals are achieved.

· Some basic computer skills are preferred (not required)- (Outlook, Word, Excel).

· Basic construction understanding using tools such as but not limited to shovels, sledgehammers, picks, wrenches, and hydraulic tools.

· Ability to work around loud machines and equipment.

· Ability to work alone or in mixed groups.

· Ability to work in all kinds of weather conditions.

· Must be able to lift, up to, but not limited to, 70lbs.

· Ability to bend, stand, kneel or sit for long periods.

· Effective verbal and written communication skills.

· Must be at least 18 years of age.

· Finger dexterity, operation of motor vehicle, operation of equipment, manage multiple tasks/projects, close attention to detail and adapt to ever changing work environment.

· Working hours are typically Monday – Friday between the hours of 7am and 5pm w/Sat. and Sun. as needed.

· Be available for after-hour call outs.

· Valid driver’s license.

· Operational vehicle to commute to/from work.

· Positive attitude and ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment.

· Exposure to chemicals, noise, dust and heights.

· Ability to successfully pass FRA-mandated background check, pre-employment and ongoing random drug screens, physical examination, and breath alcohol test.
