About This Role
Reading Assist's Tutors to Teachers Delaware program, in collaboration with Wilmington University, offers an opportunity for participants to obtain a Master’s degree by committing to two years of AmeriCorps service as a Fellow or a reading tutor for underserved elementary students in Delaware.

This program allows Fellows to earn an M.Ed in Special Education and Delaware state licensure within two years. During the second year, Fellows engage in a school district teaching residency, receiving an extra stipend while gaining valuable teaching experience.

Reading Assist Fellows are placed in elementary schools across Delaware, focusing on providing reading instruction to kindergarten through third-grade students who encounter significant reading difficulties. Our Fellows play a crucial role in teaching foundational reading skills to students who may struggle to learn through traditional classroom methods, making a lasting impact on the educational outcomes of young learners.

Hourly Requirements

  • Full-time: 38-40 hours/week, Monday-Friday from approximately 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (plus planning time)
  • Part-time: 26-28 hours/week, Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. OR Tuesday-Thursday 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (plus planning time)

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily one-on-one or small group reading sessions in person lasting 30 minutes for up to 10 students.
  • Complete 1200 service hours (900 if part-time) each year of the program, starting August 25, 2025, and ending in June 2027.
  • Participate in a comprehensive three-week, full-time, graduate-level initial training.
  • Develop personalized lesson plans tailored to individual student needs and monitor progress accordingly.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with a coach to receive guidance and feedback on performance.
  • Actively contribute to the AmeriCorps community by participating in training, events, and collaborative projects.
  • Coordinate closely with school staff, adhering to school schedules, including breaks and holidays.
  • Complete asynchronous courses for the M.Ed. program at Wilmington University and maintain 3.0 GPA throughout the program.

Qualifications
Tutors to Teachers Delaware is seeking passionate, capable tutors willing to serve their students and the community. You do not need teaching experience, but a commitment to students for the entire school year is required. Applicants must:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in any field with a 3.0 GPA
  • Apply and be accepted into the Wilmington University M.Ed. program
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Complete an AmeriCorps application and background check
  • Have a strong interest in literacy, education, and community service
  • Be open to working with children in kindergarten through third grade, including children who may have behavioral challenges in addition to academic needs
  • Own a computer (laptop/desktop) and respond promptly to communications
  • Portray resilience, adaptability, and a professional demeanor
  • Demonstrate openness to receiving feedback, patience, and flexibility in approach
  • Be proficient in teaching foundational reading concepts such as sound blending, segmenting, and word manipulation techniques
  • Have experience with or willingness to learn Google Drive, Zoom, PowerPoint, and email communication tools
  • Exhibit willingness to commit to a full school year of service working daily in schools as a tutor.
  • Participate in a school district teaching residency during the second year in the program.

Compensation and Benefits

Candidates can earn between $20,000-$50,000 a year in stipends in exchange for their service with Reading Assist, earning their degree, and gaining hands-on classroom experience as teaching residents. Through this Reading Assist and Wilmington University partnership, your M.Ed in Special Education can cost as little as $4,000 once all credits and education awards are applied.

Benefits include:

  • $1,000 in matching funding from Wilmington University for AmeriCorps service (to apply toward tuition/school debt).
  • $20,000-$50,000 Teacher Residency stipend
  • $160 waived admission fee.
  • 12 credits granted upon completion of the Reading Assist Intervention Program.
  • $1,000 biweekly living allowance ($700/biweekly if part-time)
  • $5,100 in Segal Education Award upon successful completion of 1200 service hours for full-time ($3,600 for part-time, 900 service hours)**
  • A $500 relocation allowance if moving 50 miles or more to serve
  • Job placement for teaching in the state of Delaware (up to 3 years)
  • Student loan deferment
  • An opportunity to receive professional certification in reading intervention (August and September sessions only)

*Members who are 55 years of age or older when they begin service may gift the education award to a child or grandchild.
