The Lathe Operator must perform a skilled level of work in the skimming and / or removal of a cover during the manufacturing process as part of preparing a customer’s roll. Assignments are received in the form of tickets that are on the schedule board and the plant factory order. Work methods and procedures are determined by company policy. On the job training will be provided that meets these specification and requirements and the employee is expected to maintain these standards after completion of training period.
Essential Functions :

Knowledge of :
Job related materials.The tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of lathes.The hazards and safety precautions of operating moving equipment.Knowledge to operate an overhead crane.Ability to :
Must learn to operate the overhead cranes and choose the proper cables or slings required for the roll weight.Must inspect all cables or slings as well as the crane prior to making a lift or movement.Match the serial number stamped on the end of the journal against the factory order.If bearings are required for the set up in the lathe, then the stands or supports will be installed in the lathe prior to lifting the roll body.Make sure the bearings are installed, lubed, and protected during the process of the job.Sign in to point man under job description associated with task that will be performed.Load the roll body in the lathe safely and then jog the roll in the machine to make sure set up is safe and good.If roll cover is to be removed or stripped take incoming crown profile and hardness readings and record on the factory order.Choose the proper tooling required to remove the existing cover.Slack belt the shell to remove the light film of material from the shell.Record the shell dimensions and length of the roll body in the proper areas on the factory order.Make a drawing or notations on special designs or end configuration on the factory order.Must be able to work with customers and sales engineer’s on cut off reports for roll inspections due to issues or problems.Skimming and cutting ends on a cover is also a job skill that must be obtainedPerform safety inspection on crane prior to use.Obtain the factory order of the roll you will be working with and check roll weight on the factory order. Match serial number on journal with factory order.Sign in to point man for the proper job task for this scope of work.Select the proper cables for the weight of the roll and prep the lathe with the proper stands for cradling the roll during the job description associated with the roll.Make sure the proper bearings are installed if necessary if required for turning the roll body safely during the scope of work.Proceed to load the roll body in the lathe and secure the roll for the procedure.Check and record the run out of the journals or bearings to make sure they are within the specified tolerances.Jog the roll body once loaded into the machine and make sure your set up is safe.If this is a recover the wrapper duct will be removed by wrapping on a steel drum that is air driven. Second operator is required for this process due to safety.The roll surface will then be measured in 6-8 places and the sizes will be recorded on the factory order.Then the operator will calculate the amount of size that must be skimmed off in the lathe leaving ample oversize for the grinder operator.The skimmed diameter and hardness is then recorded on the factory order.The ends of the roll will then be cut flush with the shell unless otherwise stated on the factory order or drawing.The roll will be removed and staged close to the grinder that will perform the final grind.Log out of point man for this roll.For the removal of a cover the same steps 1through 8 will apply.The crown profile and hardness readings incoming will be recorded on the factory order.The run out on the bearings or journals will be checked and recorded, showing that they are within tolerance.Select the proper tool and start removing the cover in numerous passes until the entire cover is down to bare metal surface.May require a slack belt pass or passes to remove the light rubber film left on the core for proper clean up.Record all diameter and dimensions; make drawing of anything out of the ordinary on the factory order.Unload roll return to mechanical services for inspection and bearing removal if applicable.Sign out of point man for this task.Additional Requirements :
Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon the work location, assignment, or shift.Overtime hours may be required.Working Conditions and Physical Effort :
Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and / or loud noises.Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 50 pounds or standing and / or walking for more than eight (8) hours per day.Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.Acceptable Experience and Training :
