Job Description for Driver:

General Description:

Responsible for the safe operation of special service vans, small transit vehicles with maximum capacity of 16 passengers; operates wheelchair lift and assists passengers on and off vans as necessary; responds as dispatched to provide transportation to the general public; maintains data and prepares reports as required; responsible for vehicle appearance and safe operation condition; performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Eight grade education and some related experience in the operation of a motor vehicle preferred.

• You must be able to accept and follow instructions.

• You must follow all safety and driving laws.

• Must be in good physical condition.

• Must be courteous and dependable and be able to win the confidence of patrons.

• Must hold a Texas Class C Drivers license to operate a motor vehicle and have established a clean driving record. (Class C CDL) (P Endorsement) also accepted.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Knowledge of traffic regulations and geography of the City and the area; ability to read, write legibly, add, subtract, multiply, and divide. To read and understand City map; must be able to pass physical examination with normal vision in both eyes or correctable with glasses and have good depth and color perception, must be alert, possess manual dexterity and ability to safely operate a van in heavily congested areas; ability to deal effectively and tactfully with individuals; ability to use portable electronic tablet to view appointments, schedule routes, and daily work schedule.

Responsibilities:

1. Receive daily schedule and routing from the dispatcher for the transportation of the general public.

2. To help each passenger on and off the vehicle and give aid in carrying bundles or packages.

3. To ensure the safety of each passenger while riding the vehicle and be certain that each rider is safely back to their destination or home.

4. Responsible for the maintenance of the vehicle: (pre and post inspections)

A. To keep interior and exterior of vehicle clean at all times.

B. To inform the transportation director when appointments for services of the vehicle are due.

C. To report immediately any defects or malfunctions of the vehicle to the transportation director.

D. To ensure the safety and security of the vehicle.

E. To complete required reports.

5. To attend appropriate training and staff meetings as directed by the transportation director.

6. To maintain daily trip logs and provide necessary data for the reporting and evaluation system, as required.

7. To act in a cheerful manner and with patience and understanding.

8. Not to accept money or gifts from the passengers for service provided.

9. To keep in contact with transportation director when applicable.

10. To assist both ambulatory older persons and wheelchair persons from the ground level door of the person’s home into the vehicle and vice versa. Drivers are not expected to move wheelchair persons up and downstairs inside the person’s place of residence and destination.

11. To perform public information functions as assigned by the transportation director

12. To do all related work as assigned by the transportation director/supervisor.

13. To report all incidents and accidents immediately.

14. To be responsible for all company equipment assigned to each driver.

15. To log in and out daily of electronic tablet for updates, schedule, pre and post inspections, and any new messages from dispatcher or supervisor.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $12.00 - $14.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
