The following are RealogicHR’s job minimum job requirements and competencies for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Please note that this list is not all inclusive. Pending state guidelines, the scope of practice may be expanded or limited. Individual institutions may also expand or limit the duties that an LPN may carry out. LPNs may also obtain additional training that allows them to perform additional duties.
Basic Requirements
- Experience as LPN
- Successful completion of LPN program and NCLEX-PN exam
- Current BLS certification
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
- Familiarity with hospital health, safety and sanitation standards and procedures
- Understanding of confidentiality obligations and nursing best practices
- Knowledge of medical and hospital terminology
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Basic knowledge of electronic medical records systems (EMRs)
Basic Description of Duties
- Record patient’s medical history
- Take and record vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, pulse oximetry, etc.) as directed
- Observe patients under treatment. Look for progress, decline, side effects from treatment/medications, etc.
- Monitor patient’s condition: including fluid intake, outputs, etc.
- Help to maintain patient’s chart
- Assist patients as needed with any daily activities (bathing, grooming, eating, etc.)
- Administer medications and/or injections as directed by MD, PA, NP, RN
- Perform/assist with wound care
- Collect lab samples as needed/directed
- Provide emotional and psychological support
- Communication with patient’s family and/or friends as directed
- Help to educate patients and families about treatments and procedures
