Job Description - Director of Programs
Rebuilding Exchange (RE) invests in our communities by reusing building materials, reducing construction waste, and training, supporting, and connecting people seeking careers in the building trades. We divert building materials from landfills through two reuse retail stores in Evanston and Chicago and offer deconstruction services to homeowners that want to save their building materials from landfills. Finally, we run paid workforce training programs to support individuals overcoming barriers to employment to access careers in the building trades. Our training programs are run at our Evanston and Chicago locations.
We seek a Director of Programs to oversee all programmatic work and strategy. The Director will lead and grow our vocational training programs to train, support and prepare individuals overcoming barriers to employment to access careers in the building trades. The Director will be an experienced supervisor who successfully develops, motivates and supports a highly functioning team.
The Director will serve as a critical member of the organization’s leadership team, and will engage in everything from strategic vision to board engagement to communications to fundraising.
This is a full-time salaried position, Monday-Friday typically between 8:00am and 5:00pm. The Director of Workforce Training directly supervises three employees and reports to the Executive Director.
Primary Responsibilities:
Program Leadership and Delivery
- Oversee the coordination and delivery of all vocational training programs and contracts, promoting collaborative relationships across the organization and ensuring that the expectations of participants, funders, partners, employers, and other stakeholders are consistently met.
- Establish annual program and staff goals and objectives. Track results and use data to inform funders, maintain grant compliance and lead program innovation and evaluation.
- Participate in fundraising efforts and manage program budgets to maintain a high level of fiscal responsibility.
- Lead the implementation of programmatic growth.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with program partners and in broader coalitions to foster collaboration and systems change.
Staff Management and Development
- Motivate, train and support the workforce training team of 3 direct reports and 7 indirect reports, including building a team culture of high performance, continuous improvement, and shared accountability.
- Identify and establish development and advancement opportunities for expanded roles or new responsibilities.
- Collaborate effectively across the organization and leadership to meet organizational goals
- Works alongside staff, establishing tasks and priorities, mentoring, and team-building.
- Provide ongoing support and feedback regarding job performance.
Organizational leadership to strengthen and grow the Rebuilding Exchange
- Participate in the staff leadership team and management of the organization.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and leadership team to develop annual goals and program budgets.
- Represent the organization in public settings and promote the program.
- Attend monthly staff meetings and participate in ongoing safety updates, training and employee reviews.
- Contribute to a collaborative working environment that strives for excellence in service
- Other duties as assigned
Job Skills and Qualifications:
- At least 5 years experience as a program manager or project director, able to oversee multiple complex initiatives and projects, supervise and coach a team, and meet deadlines efficiently and successfully
- Experience and skill with workforce training program development, evaluation and reporting, and budgeting. Government contracting and compliance are highly desired.
- Deep knowledge of the building trades/construction industry, especially career pathways through employers, continuing education, and union apprenticeship programs.
- Excellent communications skills and ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the organization
- Reliable transportation to work at Chicago and Evanston locations
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, growth oriented organization
