Position Summary
The Detox Medical Provider will be responsible for providing comprehensive medical care and treatment to individuals undergoing detoxification from substance abuse. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in addiction medicine and be knowledgeable about detox protocols, withdrawal symptoms, and appropriate interventions. The Detox Medical Provider will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the safety and well-being of patients throughout the detoxification process.
During their shift, the medical provider will need to be on-site while rounding on patients then will need to be available by phone for the remainder of their 24 hour shift.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct on-site, initial medical assessments and evaluations of patients entering the detoxification program within 24 hours of admission
- Be immediately available during “call” by phone for all patient-related medical questions from nursing staff
- Develop individualized detoxification/treatment plans based on the patient's medical history, substance abuse patterns, and withdrawal symptoms.
- Monitor patients closely during the detox process, assessing vital signs, withdrawal symptoms, and overall physical and mental health.
- Order appropriate medications and interventions to manage withdrawal symptoms and promote patient comfort and safety.
- Collaborate with the treatment team, including nurses, counselors, and therapists, to provide coordinated care and address patients' physical, psychological, and social needs.
- Document all medical assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and medication administration accurately and in a timely manner.
- Educate patients about detoxification processes, medication management, and strategies for relapse prevention.
- Provide medical consultations and support to the treatment team, as needed.
- Stay updated on current trends and best practices in addiction medicine and detoxification protocols.
- Comply with all relevant legal and ethical standards, including maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to applicable regulations and guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Medical Degree (MD or DO) OR Physician Assistant (PA) degree OR Nurse Practitioner degree from accredited college.
- Valid Oregon medical license.
- Proven experience in providing medical care to individuals with substance abuse disorders, preferably in a detoxification or addiction treatment setting.
- Knowledge of detoxification protocols, withdrawal symptoms, and medication-assisted treatment.
- Excellent diagnostic and clinical skills, with the ability to assess and manage complex medical and psychiatric conditions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to demonstrate empathy, compassion, and respect for patients with substance abuse disorders.
- Proficiency in electronic medical record systems and basic computer skills.
- Willingness to adhere to ethical and professional standards and maintain professional development through continuing education and training opportunities.
