Position Overview
North Coast is seeking a qualified Lead Instructor to support youth sailing programs during the summer season. The Lead Instructor will be responsible for teaching sailing skills, ensuring student safety, and facilitating an engaging learning environment. This position requires a strong sailing background and the ability to supervise an Assistant Instructor when necessary. Instruction may include both on-water and land-based lessons, with a focus on skill development and safety procedures.
Responsibilities
- Instruct youth sailors, either independently or while supervising an Assistant Instructor.
- Ensure student safety by providing on-water support and enforcing safety protocols.
- Assist students in learning basic knots, boat parts, and fundamental sailing techniques.
- Facilitate a structured and enjoyable learning environment.
- Maintain a clean and organized sailing facility, including sheds, gear, and equipment.
- Oversee the proper launching and hauling of safety boats weekly.
- Perform routine troubleshooting on outboard motors.
- Conduct basic maintenance and repairs on NCCS-owned sailing assets.
- Take daily attendance and ensure all equipment is properly stored after use.
Schedule
Anticipated work schedule is flexible but typically includes weekday instruction and occasional weekend responsibilities. Hours may vary depending on class sizes and program needs.
Pay
Compensation is hourly at $15/hour, 35-40 hours/week.
1-year membership to the Bayfield Rec Center from May to May
Qualifications of an Ideal Candidate
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification required. (Lifeguard preferred)
- US Sailing Level 1 Instructor certification or higher required.
- Strong sailing knowledge with the ability to instruct and correct students on the water.
- Experience working with youth in an instructional setting.
- Basic competency in boat maintenance and troubleshooting.
