The Library Assistant assists the Library Director in all aspects of running the library. This includes helping patrons, supervising volunteers, and performing technical library functions.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Be competent in all aspects of the library management software to assist both patrons and volunteers and to resolve any problems that arise.
  • Exhibit excellent customer service behavior.
  • Instruct patrons in the use of computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, eReaders, and other devices.
  • Manage volunteer schedules and training.
  • Assist in procedures for opening and closing the library.
  • Checkout library materials to patrons and check-in returned materials.
  • Sort and re-shelve returned books, periodicals, and other materials.
  • Enter new residents into the library patron database.
  • Answer patrons' questions and assist them in finding information and materials.
  • Teach patrons to utilize the library software to find, reserve, and renew materials.
  • Notify patrons of overdue materials
  • Answer the telephone, organize, and maintain files, and perform other clerical tasks such as operating a copier and fax machine.
  • Order library, office, cleaning, and other supplies.
  • Maintain a consistent record of acceptable attendance and punctuality according to policy guidelines.
  • Assess fines and fees for late, lost, or damaged materials.
  • Select, order, receive, process, and maintain all library materials.
  • Enter all materials into the online library catalog and update these records as necessary.
  • Repair damaged materials.
  • Assist with inventory and deselection of library materials.
  • Assist with selection and presentation of library materials.
  • Act as a reader's or movie advisor and recommend reading or viewing material.
  • Help plan and present special programs, such as author book talks, classes, story times, and outreach.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Regular attendance to assigned shift(s) is required.

This position supervises volunteers.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

Sufficient Training and education to demonstrate possession of required knowledge, skills and qualifications are required.

  • Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or one year related experience and/or training in a library setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience with computer input and labeling.
