The Parks Crew Specialist is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and order of recreational facilities, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors. Key responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing various areas, including restrooms, gyms, main office and conference rooms. The specialist also handles waste disposal, performs minor repairs, and assists with event clean up as well as ground keeping.
Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential for this role, as is a commitment to promoting a clean and enjoyable community space.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform daily cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors in all areas, including hallways, restrooms, and communal spaces.
  • Disinfect high-touch surfaces (doorknobs, light switches, countertops) to reduce the spread of germs and ensure visitor safety.
  • Empty trash cans and/or recycling bins throughout the facility, ensuring proper disposal methods are followed.
  • Clean the main office area, including dusting desks, equipment, and other open surfaces.
  • Conduct regular walkthroughs of the facilities to identify cleaning needs, maintenance issues, and any safety hazards.
  • Report any repairs or maintenance needs, beyond minor repairs, to Park Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Monitor inventory levels of cleaning supplies, toiletries, and paper products.
  • Assist in ordering and restocking supplies as needed, ensuring adequate levels for daily operations.
  • Prepare spaces for recreational programs by ensuring cleanliness and readiness before events and classes begin.
  • Maintain cleanliness during events by monitoring high-traffic areas and performing quick cleanups as necessary.
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling cleaning chemicals.
  • Stay informed about health and safety regulations relevant to facility cleaning and maintenance.
  • Properly maintain and clean custodial equipment, including vacuums, floor scrubbers, and other cleaning tools.
  • Help to maintain the grounds of Castine which may include mowing grass, trim edges, hedges, rakes leaves, sweeps sidewalks, picks up litter, tends flower beds; monitors watering of grass, shrubs and grounds as needed.
  • Greet visitors in a friendly manner and assist with inquiries regarding facility locations and amenities.
  • Provide information on restroom locations, available facilities, and any scheduled maintenance that may affect visitor access.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be 21 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Understanding of effective cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations, including proper handling of cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to notice cleanliness issues and maintain high standards in facility upkeep.
  • Skill in prioritizing tasks and managing time effectively to complete cleaning duties efficiently.
  • Strong verbal communication skills to interact with visitors and team members, conveying information clearly and courteously.
  • Ability to assess situations quickly and find solutions, such as addressing spills or identifying maintenance needs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Current driver’s license issued by state of residence.
  • Satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS (with or without accommodations)

  • Capability to perform physical tasks, including lifting to 40lbs, bending, and standing for extended periods or repetitive tasks over extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use hands and fingers skillfully to operate cleaning equipment and tools, such as vacuums, mops, and disinfectant sprayers.
  • Skill in coordinating hand movements with visual input, necessary for tasks like sweeping, mopping, and applying cleaning solutions effectively.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS (with or without accommodations)

  • Visual Acuity-Ability to see and identify cleaning needs, potential hazards, and maintenance issues.

o Distinguishing between different colors for cleaning supplies and safety signage.

  • Auditory Skills -Ability to hear sounds that indicate issues, such as alarms or equipment malfunctions.
  • Tactile Sensation-Ability to feel textures and temperatures when handling various cleaning tools and materials.

o Sensitivity to surfaces to ensure thorough cleaning and maintenance.

  • Olfactory Sense-Ability to detect odors that may indicate cleaning needs, spills, or safety concerns (e.g., chemical leaks or mold).
  • Physical Coordination-Good hand-eye coordination to operate cleaning equipment and perform tasks efficiently.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

In this role you may be exposed to any of the following:

  • Chemical Exposure-Risk of exposure to cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and sanitizers.
  • Uneven Surfaces-Wet or uneven surfaces, especially during cleaning activities or throughout the park.
  • Infectious Diseases-Potential exposure to germs and bacteria in restrooms and high-traffic areas.
  • Noise Exposure-Prolonged exposure to loud cleaning equipment, such as vacuums and floor scrubbers.
  • Biological Hazards-Contact with mold, mildew, or other allergens present in damp areas, which can pose health risks.
  • Pest Encounters-Possible encounters with insects or rodents in outdoor areas and storage spaces.
  • Extreme Weather Conditions- Exposure to extreme temperatures, or changes in weather patterns depending on the season.
