The Lead Design Engineer is responsible for designing complex general aviation structures and systems on production and development aircraft. They will also train and mentor junior engineers in design work and have overall responsibility for compliance to company, industry, and regulatory standards. We are looking for well-rounded engineers that understand the complex interaction of all systems but have expertise in one or more areas such as Structures, Avionics, Electrical, Mechanical Systems, Coatings, or Tooling.

The Lead Design Engineer is responsible for designing complex general aviation structures and systems on production and development aircraft. They will also train and mentor junior engineers in design work and have overall responsibility for compliance to company, industry, and regulatory standards. We are looking for well-rounded engineers that understand the complex interaction of all systems but have expertise in one or more areas such as Structures, Avionics, Electrical, Mechanical Systems, Coatings, or Tooling.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Designing components, sub-assemblies, and systems relative to general aviation aircraft (generate concepts, develop designs, validate assumptions and data, create 3D drawings, test designs, and gain relevant approvals).
- Creating, issuing, and revising certification programs, test plans, and reports. Issuing and updating compliance documents and reports.
- Issuing Minor Change documentation.
- Collaborating with the Aircraft Certification Office (ACO) on major change approvals and monitor and provide regular status on progress to Lead and Principal Engineers.
- Maintaining the change register and conducting design audits with the ACO.
- Working with FAA and foreign regulators on type certificate validations.
- Using SolidWorks, create, modify, and update engineering drawings for both individual components and large, complex assemblies in accordance with company procedure manuals.
- Training and mentoring less experienced engineers, including work assignment and performance management.
- Collaborating with the production team to improve product quality, production efficiency, and workplace safety.
- Bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET accredited university (relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree on a case-by-case basis).
- 7 (seven) or more years of relevant work experience in aerospace design.
- Proficiency with 3D modeling software, preferably SolidWorks.
- Ability to follow a structured design and certification process.
- Experience analyzing, calculating, and validating flight loads for aircraft structures, components, and/or systems in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements (preferred).
- Composite aircraft design and fabrication experience (preferred).
- Lean manufacturing knowledge (preferred).
- High intellectual curiosity, creative thinking and problem-solving, and demonstrated initiative (preferred).
- Passion for aircraft, flying, and all things aviation (preferred).
