The Assistant General Manager is responsible for safe and efficient operation of the transportation, track, mechanical, and maintenance departments at Gary Railway in a manner that ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Job Responsibilities:
Manages and promotes a safe operation as a core value for all operating employees, correcting unsafe acts and conditions creating a safe work environment for employees, customers, and the public.
Conducts routine Facility Assessments of facilities and operations and makes recommendations to the General Manager for the formulation of plans, policies, programs, and objectives, and assists in bringing them to successful conclusions.
Oversees the organization structure, including staffing, utilization, development, and succession of management under his responsibility.
Responsible for the operating plan to ensure world class service to customers, freight schedules and enforces adherence to such schedules utilizing all tools available with emphasis on quality procedures. Establishes and monitors objectives to achieve continued improvement in customer service.
Responsible for operating budgets and financial plan.
Responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, company policies, and labor agreements.
Direct department supervision under and indirectly supervise the work forces on a 24-hour basis.
Regulate manpower, motive power, and crew power, to reflect fluctuations in business conditions.
Evaluate performance and take the necessary action to correct all substandard performance.
Responsible for all incident investigation, reporting, and root cause determination.
Oversees major derailments, making arrangements for the clearing of wrecks and detouring traffic as is necessary to prevent service delays.
Ensure compliance with Company Policy and FRA drug and alcohol testing as required.
Job Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
Bachelor's degree in Transportation, Logistics, Business Management, or Business Administration or equivalent is preferred.
Valid driver's license required.
Minimum of 8-years of progressive railroad operations or equivalent industry experience required.
Supervisory experience required.
Computer proficiency required (MS Office Software).
Understanding of Railway Labor Act, applicable labor agreements, federal laws and regulations is required.
Excellent problem solving, multi-tasking, and motivational skills is preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills is required.
Must be willing and available to work shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to accomplish job requirements.
Must be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather.
