The Cast Specialist serves as a key member of the orthopedic team, assisting health care professionals in delivering patient care with a focus on all casting duties.
The role includes preparing, applying, removing, and adjusting casts and splints under physician guidance, as well as managing orthopedic appliances and durable medical equipment (DME).
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, apply, remove, and adjust casts and splints under physician direction.
- Assist with procedures including wound care and fracture reductions.
- Prepare and apply orthopedic appliances such as pre-operative braces, crutches, and other soft goods.
- Conduct specialized measurements for custom brace fitting.
- Instruct patients in cast care and the use of orthopedic appliances.
- Prepare and adjust traction equipment for fracture beds as needed.
- Maintain a clean and well-stocked cast and soft goods room.
- Order special supplies or equipment, including DME, to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Coordinate the collection of patient data for billing of specialty equipment.
- Participate in maintaining a clean and safe environment and in continuous quality improvement activities.
- Support positive customer and peer relations.
- High school diploma.
- One year of experience in a hospital, clinic, or medical practice setting.
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology related to casting, splints, and braces.
- Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly.
- Experience in clinic operations.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
