JOB TITLE: Human Resources Manager
LOCATION: 4150 Platt Rd, Ann Arbor, MI, but supporting other two locations
FLSA STATUS: This position is exempt for purposes of federal wage-hour law.

Recycle Ann Arbor (RAA) is searching for a Human Resources Manager to join our Human Resources Department. Recycle Ann Arbor is a mission-driven Zero Waste organization whose mission is to develop and operate innovative reuse, recycling, and zero-waste programs that improve the environmental quality of our community. As a Mission Based Non-Profit Organization founded in 1977, our annual budget is $10M, generated through providing these zero waste services: Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) recycling processing services, Recycling Curbside Collection Services, Recycling Drop Off Services and Construction & Demolition (C&D) Recovery Services. We have approximately 50 employees and are continuing to grow!

Position Summary
We are a small but mighty, two-person HR department seeking a Human Resources Manager who reports to and will work with the Human Resources Director. This is a hands-on HR role. This person will play a pivotal role in performing and overseeing all HR functions, ensuring compliance with labor laws, fostering positive employee relations, and managing benefits and insurance programs. The ideal candidate is experienced in union environments, passionate about organizational growth, and driven by our mission. This role requires a proactive, strategic thinker with a positive attitude and a commitment to fostering an equitable and supportive workplace culture. Essential Functions and Responsibilities – What you will be doing:
Strategic HR Leadership & Compliance
- Using a hands-on approach, lead and oversee the HR department programs while ensuring alignment with organizational goals and mission.
- Analyze HR metrics to identify trends and inform decision making.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws, and nonprofit regulations, including risk mitigation strategies.
- Update and enforce HR policies, employee handbooks, and procedures that align with the organization's goals and objectives.
- Partner with leadership to collaboratively drive key strategic initiatives and support business goals across the organization.
- Foster a zero-waste, mission-based culture within the organization by developing initiatives aimed at fostering a top-tier workplace culture as our organization continues to grow.
Employee Relations & Union Contract Oversight
- Serve as a trusted resource for employees, fostering a positive work environment by promoting open communication, resolving workplace concerns, and supporting employees in various aspects of their professional and personal well-being.
- In addition to traditional HR responsibilities, this position also serves as a resource of information for employees such as understanding the importance of and how to utilize the retirement plan, accessing financial assistance, and navigating life events that may impact their work. By providing guidance and connecting employees with available resources, this role helps ensure a supportive and inclusive workplace culture.
- Recognize and champion diversity as a key strength of RAA, fostering an environment where different perspectives drive innovation and success
- Manage employee relations matters, including conflict resolution, investigations, and manage the grievance resolution process, and with the Director of HR, interprets and upholds the union contract and the negotiation process.
- Lead the process for managers on performance management, disciplinary actions, staff development, assist on special projects such as community events, companywide recognitions and celebrations
- Partner with leadership to drive employee engagement, retention, and development initiatives.
- Maintain personnel records, documentation, and HR filing systems both paper and electronic documentation
Benefits, Compensation & Insurance
- Administer and manage benefits administration, including health insurance, retirement plans, leave policies, open enrollment, and wellness programs.
- Co-lead with the Director the annual benefits renewal process with benefit vendors and brokers, negotiating and shopping the market when appropriate. Continuously identifies ongoing alternative vendors and programs to be prepared for enrollment decisions
- Assist the Director to evaluate and recommend competitive compensation structures that align with industry standards and budget constraints.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for benefits inquiries and open enrollment
Risk Management
- Create and upholds organizational standards for managing work injuries that support the injured employee and minimize budgetary impact to the organization. Tracks the e-Mod rate and works to develop and implement processes to continue to improve on the rate.
- Manage the Workers’ Compensation (WC) process, including communicating with WC carriers, occupational clinics, managed care networks and other stakeholders as needed.
- Utilizing collaborative processes, with the Operations Managers, lead the development of annual safety goals with the safety team to ensure compliance with state and local laws.
Talent Development & Organizational Growth
- Design interview questions, conduct interviews, and create employment offers and packages for successful candidates (full recruitment cycle)
- Actively seek and engage diverse talent, leveraging a deep understanding of fairness, belonging, and inclusion best practices to build a more inclusive workforce.
- Develop and implement recruitment strategies to attract and retain top talent.
- Support leadership in strategic workforce planning to align with the organization's mission and impact goals.
- Coordinate and conduct new hire orientation and training with management to ensure seamless transitions and experiences for employees into the company
- Through the Director of HR, work to identify, create, and facilitate professional development initiatives and/or resolution of organizational needs around structure, leadership, teamwork and employee and manager development
- Working with the HR Director and other leaders of the organization, develops and administers a performance management program within the current HRIS system that links the organization’s objectives to individual performance and contribution
Safety & IT Systems Support:
- Assist employees with basic IT troubleshooting issues, including HR systems and software.
- Collaborate with the IT contractor to ensure seamless system access and functionality, managing onsite presence, and ordering equipment, as needed.
- Lead IT projects such as asset tag management, updating and maintaining company SharePoint system, and other such programs
- In conjunction with the organization’s Safety Leaders and Safety Consultants, apply all OSHA standards to business practices, provides annual OSHA training, and maintains required OSHA records, including completing and filing the 300 Logs
- Actively participate in the company-wide Safety Committee, including assisting in maintaining manuals and site safety binders, ensuring all and records are kept current of trainings required and received and making safety recommendations.
- Work collaboratively with the Safety Consultant
Payroll Administration:
- Manage and process bi-weekly payroll, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Work with the payroll provider to ensure payroll and benefit rules are accurate, which may include running reports and performing audits.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws related to payroll, benefits, and industry best practices.
- Partner with internal finance department to collaborate on best practices, timely and accurate payment, tax compliance, and financial reporting as needed.

- Nonprofit sector experience is strongly preferred.
- Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to the environment and to working with community-based organizations and culturally diverse communities
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to always maintain confidential information and professionalism a must
Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirements - what we are looking for:
- 3-5 years of progressive HR experience, including union and labor relations experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (HR certification preferred).
- Demonstrated proficiency in working with basic Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience with Paycom highly preferred – willingness to learn required.
Salary : $75,000 - $79,000
