Job Title: Waste Transfer Station – Operator/Laborer

Reports To: Transfer Station Supervisor

FLSA Status: Hourly

Salary Range: $18 per hour

SUMMARY

As a Waste Transfer Station Laborer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of the waste transfer station. Your responsibilities will primarily involve operating small to medium-sized pieces of equipment and performing various manual labor tasks such as loading trucks, switching trailers, and cleanup of the work area/yard. You will be responsible for receiving, sorting, and transferring waste materials for further processing and disposal. This position requires the ability to operate a manual shift semi, physical stamina, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining a clean and organized work environment.

MAJOR EXPECTATIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate small to medium-sized equipment, such as manual shift switch truck, forklifts, front-end loaders, compactors, to sort, and transport waste materials within the transfer station.
  • Conduct routine inspections of equipment by completing DVIR to ensure they are in proper working condition and report any malfunctions or maintenance needs to the supervisor.
  • Follow safety guidelines and protocols while operating equipment and during the waste handling process to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Receive and inspect incoming waste materials from trucks and other collection vehicles to ensure they comply with the station's guidelines and regulations.
  • Load and unload waste materials onto designated areas or containers with the help of equipment, adhering to proper weight distribution and safety standards.
  • Keep the waste transfer station clean and organized by regularly sweeping, removing debris, and ensuring waste is properly contained and disposed of.
  • Monitor waste containers for overflowing or potential environmental hazards and take appropriate action to rectify the situation.
  • Assist in general maintenance tasks, such as repairing equipment, replacing damaged containers, and ensuring the overall functionality of the transfer station.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, waste management regulations, and environmental guidelines to promote a safe working environment and prevent accidents.
  • Participate in regular safety training sessions and communicate potential safety concerns to the management promptly.
  • Assist in emergency response procedures, such as spills or incidents involving hazardous materials, following established protocols and guidelines.
  • Work effectively as part of a team, communicating with supervisors and fellow laborers to ensure smooth operations and timely completion of tasks.
  • Assist co-workers in their tasks when necessary to maintain productivity levels and support operational goals.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent, technical school a plus; or three months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee must possess sufficient endurance to perform tasks over a long period of time.

  • Previous experience in waste management, recycling, or general labor is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to operate small to medium-sized equipment, such as forklifts and front-end loaders, and willingness to learn new equipment operation skills.
  • Physical strength and stamina to perform manual labor tasks, including lifting heavy objects, standing for extended periods, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Basic understanding of waste sorting procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate waste segregation and proper equipment operation.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Willingness to comply with safety regulations and maintain a clean and organized work area.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Expected hours: 45 – 55 per week
