POSITION: Environmental Technician - Seasonal
LOCATION: Red Cliff Environmental Office
WAGE: $17.00-$20.00/hour, 40 hrs./week; seasonal
SUPERVISOR(S): Environmental Director
THIS IS A SEASONAL FULL TIME, NON-EXEMPT POSITION
JOB SUMMARY: The Environmental Technician applies their interest and knowledge to field sampling and database management techniques. The incumbent will be most involved in the collection and data entry of water quality and environmental parameters at various monitoring sites on the Red Cliff reservation, but opportunities to be involved in other projects of interest will also occur.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in water quality monitoring projects while adhering to field and lab standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance project plans (QAPPs).
- Assist in culvert assessments using the Great Lakes Stream Crossing Inventory Instructions.
- Assist in field work pertaining to the deployment and maintenance of continuous water monitoring stations.
- Prepare and prioritize field data for computer entry by compiling and sorting qualitative and quantitative information monthly. Maintain data entry requirements by following WQX program techniques and procedures.
- Inspect, maintain, and operate program equipment (program vehicles, monitoring equipment, off road vehicles, etc.)
- Occasionally attend trainings and conferences.
- Assist in environmental collection events that help protect natural resources and the environment. Events include, but are not limited to, tires, clean ups, e-waste, etc.

KNOWLEDGE: Must have good communication skills and basic understanding of Microsoft Office Programs; knowledge of water quality monitoring protocols, environmental/water resource issues, and equipment and machinery maintenance; experience with using water quality monitoring instruments (transducers, multiprobes, velocity/discharge readers, etc).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum High School Diploma/GED.
- Bachelor’s Degree in natural resource management, environmental sciences, or related field preferred.
- Experience with data formatting, entry, and interpretation preferred.
- Must be detail-orientated, have excellent research and computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office suite programs (Word, Excel, and Publisher)
- Knowledge of water quality monitoring and environmental/water resource issues.
- Must have good communication skills both written and oral.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, vehicle and appropriate vehicle coverage and maintain driver’s eligibility as a condition of employment. Be eligible to be put on the Tribe’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Must have ATV certification unless exempt or be able to attain certification prior to field season.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Tribal staff, community members, and other agency staff.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Be able to walk through uneven terrain in various weather conditions, and bend and lift up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office and outdoors setting with a willingness to work outside of the normal 8 – 4:30 hours (Potential for meetings to be outside normal work hours). All tribal offices are smoke-free.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to travel locally and out of town at times, if necessary.
