JOB DESCRIPTION
OFFICE ASSISTANT
DEFINITION: Under supervision, performs varied and increasingly responsible clerical
work, which includes computer work, phones and interactions with the public, work with and
cares for animals, accepting payments, and performs related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
Assistant must have a High School Diploma, G.E.D. certificate or related work experience.
Must be over 18 years old. Must have flexible schedule and be willing to work weekends and
holidays. Must be able to read and write English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
Computer experience required. Must be willing to work with and care for cats and dogs. Must
be able to lift and carry 50 pounds and be able to handle large breed dogs. Must have at least
one full year of full-time employment.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
1. Greets the public, customers, and other visitors in person or over the phone, and obtains or
gives information; explains adoption procedures to customers; assists with owner surrender
of animals according to procedures.
2. Works with the Shelter Manager to observe animal behaviors for adoptability, assists in
accepting animals into the Shelter in accordance with Policies and Procedures Manual, and
works with the Shelter Manager to facilitate care of animals and adoption into new homes.
3. Files information according to office procedure to maintain organized and accurate filing
systems, tracks and logs work using computer, and fills out forms.
4. Types a variety of documents in Excel and Word.
5. Assists in cleaning duties as scheduled to ensure animal kennels and shelter rooms are
cleaned on a daily basis.
6. Assists the Shelter Manager with placement of animals in forever homes in accordance
with adoption policies.
7. Reports to and is supervised by the Shelter Manager.
8. Maintains confidentiality
ABILITIES:
1. Public Interactions: Deal tactfully with people; maintain confidentiality of information; write
legibly to record information; and verbally communicate information clearly and concisely to
others.
2. Computer Work: Prepare simple correspondence; send and receive e-mails and social
media correspondence; and enters information into a variety of computer data sources.
3. Work as a Team: Understand and follow oral and written instructions, develop and
maintain working relationships with co-workers and volunteers, read and understand Policies
and Procedures, work independently. Be willing to complete other tasks as assigned by the
Shelter Manager.
4. Cleaning: Assist in cleaning animal kennels and rooms as scheduled. May have at least
one scheduled shift per Month. In addition, will work as a team member to help cover vacation
time and sick days for other staff to ensure the animals are cared for and the facility remains clean.
5. Animal Care: Is able to interact comfortably with both cats and dogs. Is able to observe
behaviors, interactions, and medical needs or make emergency judgements if required. Has
the physical ability to introduce animals to potential adoptive families and control the animal if
necessary to avoid injury or harm.
PAY SCALE: $15-$16 Dependent on experience.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
Employees will be provided a copy of the Red Desert Humane Society Employee Manual and
agree to abide by said Policies until such time as they are modified or changed by the Board
and Membership.
AT-WILL EMPLOYMENT:
This position is at-will employment. The Employer can terminate the employment at any time
with or without cause and this does not constitute a contract or promise of continued
employment.
HOURS: Thursday-Saturday. Part-Time position. 15-20 Hrs per week. Possibly more in the Summer months. Does include most weekends and Holidays.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour
