Job Summary
The Packaging Lead oversees daily operations of the packaging department in a sunflower seed production facility, ensuring efficient and accurate packaging of roasted and seasoned sunflower seeds while adhering to quality, safety, and production standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership:
- Supervise and lead packaging team members during shifts.
- Assign tasks and manage daily schedules to meet production goals.
- Train new team members on equipment operation, quality standards, and safety protocols.
- Monitor team performance, provide feedback, and address performance issues.
- Operational Management:
- Ensure packaging processes meet quality, weight, and sealing standards.
- Set up, calibrate, and troubleshoot packaging equipment such as bagging machines, conveyors, and labelers.
- Monitor product flow to avoid bottlenecks and minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with production and quality control teams to ensure a seamless workflow.
- Quality and Compliance:
- Inspect packaged products for consistency, proper sealing, and accurate labeling.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, food safety regulations (e.g., FDA, HACCP), and OSHA standards.
- Complete production and quality documentation accurately and on time.
- Maintenance:
- Conduct basic equipment maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams for more extensive repairs and preventative maintenance.
- Inventory and Supplies Management:
- Monitor packaging material inventory (bags, labels, boxes) and coordinate replenishment.
- Minimize waste and optimize material usage.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities to improve packaging efficiency and reduce costs.
- Implement process improvements and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Qualifications
- Experience in a food production or packaging environment, with leadership experience preferred.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot packaging machinery.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting production schedules, manuals, and quality specifications.
- Basic math and computer skills for inventory tracking and reporting.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in a production facility with varying temperatures (cooler or warmer environments depending on the process area).
- Exposure to loud machinery, dust, and food-grade oils may occur.
- Employees must wear appropriate PPE, such as gloves, hairnets, and ear protection.
- Production schedules may require overtime, weekend, or holiday shifts.
Physical Demands
- Frequently required to stand for extended periods (up to 8-10 hours per shift).
- Regularly lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
