Summary of Position
The FST and EMP instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in courses spanning both Fire Science Technology and Emergency Management and Planning. The successful candidate will teach courses that cover topics such as fire behavior, fire prevention, fire service leadership, and fire investigation, as well as disaster preparedness, incident command, risk assessment, recovery operations, and continuity planning. Courses may be offered via face-to-face, online, hybrid, and other innovative delivery methods. This role requires a dynamic educator who can foster student engagement, support academic achievement, and prepare students for careers in public safety, fire service, and emergency management.
This position reports to the Fire Science Department Program Director/Chair. The Fire Academy is conducted during the work week, with sessions typically scheduled between 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM at the Lakewood campus. However, please note that specific days, hours, and location may fluctuate based on the evolving needs of the program.
This position may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need.

- Proficiency in utilizing simulation technology and hands-on training methods.
- Strong commitment to promoting safety and excellence in fire service training.
- Demonstrated commitment working with and supporting students from diverse populations, which may include but are not limited to, historically marginalized populations such as people of color, LGBTQ community members, veterans, first generation graduates, and people with disabilities.
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Fire Science, Fire Protection, Fire Administration, Fire Investigation, Emergency Management, or a closely related field.
Experience: At least 4,000 hours of paid, non-teaching fire service or emergency management related experience within the last seven years; alternatively, recognized fire service certification (e.g., Firefighter II, Fire Officer, Fire Instructor, Emergency Manager, etc.)
Credentials: Ability to obtain a post-secondary Career and Technical Education (CTE) credential upon offer of employment.

- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting during lab instruction.
- Exposure to outdoor training environments and fire service equipment.
- Ability to communicate clearly and provide verbal instruction in a high-risk and potentially high-stress environment.
- Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 10 lbs.
- This is largely a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
- The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.

Advertised Pay
The pay for this position is $1,149.00-$1,263.00 per credit hour, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA exempt position and may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need.
This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.

Medical insurance is offered to instructors and other variable hour employees who have worked, on average, at least 30 hours per week in a 12-month period. RRCC/CCCS uses an initial 12-month measurement period to determine medical benefit eligibility, and a 12-month standard measurement period. Student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours a week when classes are in session, and may work up to 28 hours a week, during academic breaks or breaks between terms at the discretion of the college, and non-classified hourly and temporary staff are limited to 28 hours in a workweek, depending on budget and need.
