Tooling Technician
Position Overview
The Tooling Technician will be responsible for performing routine maintenance on plastic injection molds, both in the press and on the bench under the direct supervision of the Tooling Supervisor. This includes disassembling, cleaning, organizing, and reassembling complex tooling.
Key Responsibilities
General
- Ensure all work is performed safely and without injury.
- Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) at all times (no jewelry, cell phones, nicotine in any form, etc.).
- Report any food safety issues to the appropriate manager or supervisor.
- Perform housekeeping duties throughout the shift.
- Lift up to 35 pounds unassisted and stand/walk for the duration of the shift.
- Support and implement Continuous Improvement Programs.
- Initiate corrective actions for non-conformances.
- Identify and report improvement opportunities.
- Wear appropriate PPE as required.
- Work unscheduled overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Tooling Supervisor.
Tooling Functions
- Perform mold-related services according to schedule.
- Install and remove molds from injection machines.
- Provide support to the maintenance and mold shop teams.
- Maintain mold-related records and documentation.
- Execute mold maintenance tasks to meet department KPIs.
- Respond promptly to mold-related issues on the production floor.
- Maintain injection molds to ensure preservation and product quality.
- Clean up water, grease, and oil after mold installations.
- Initiate corrective actions for part containment repairs.
- Maintain injection molds, spare tooling, and cleaning supplies, including solutions in the FISA sonic cleaner.
Skills & Qualifications
- Competency in blueprint reading, pneumatics, hydraulics, machine shop equipment, metal fabrication, mechanical principles, and basic math. (Geometry and trigonometry are a plus.)
- Basic rigging skills for managing assembled molds and mold plates.
- Basic welding skills (preferred).
- Working knowledge of injection molding machines.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
- Basic computer skills.
Experience
- 3-5 years of experience preferred in:
- Mold troubleshooting and repair.
- Hot runner system repair.
- Close tolerance component maintenance.
- Injection molding process and troubleshooting.
- Ability to operate machine shop equipment such as lathes, mills, surface grinders, and measurement tools.
- Working knowledge of a computerized maintenance management system.
- Experience with ISO or similar quality systems and SQF or similar food safety systems (preferred).
Education
- Technical college diploma in a related field or an industrial license (preferred).
