Job Overview
This role involves working for a 501c3 company, and so all employees are required to sign our statement of faith.
Reporting to the Controller, the Lead Accountant plays a key role in maintaining daily accounting functions and ensuring accurate financial and contribution records for the church and its ministries. This role also involves compiling financial reports and conducting operational analysis, with supporting schedules as needed.
In addition, this position supports the upkeep of financial records and reporting. Responsibilities include overseeing general accounting, managing property-related financials, conducting internal audits, and assisting with budget oversight.
Responsibilities
Daily/Weekly:
- Approve and review weekly contribution reports from Sunday services
- Monitor and respond to voicemails and emails; address member questions
- Create pledge and designated fund reports related to missionary payables
- Share weekly contribution summaries with the Controller, Church Administrator, and Finance Committee Chair
Monthly/Semi-Monthly:
- Execute month-end general ledger closing processes
- Reconcile payroll activity to the general ledger and corresponding tax filings
- Reconcile contribution deposits with master bank account
- Verify and reconcile AP checks, ACH transfers, voids, and online payments; report discrepancies to AP Specialist
- Provide monthly financial updates for mission projects
- Complete balance sheet reconciliations as assigned by the Controller
Yearly:
- Draft acknowledgment letters for stock, grants, and qualified charitable distributions
- Manage adjustments to member statements in collaboration with the database specialist
- Lead the annual distribution of contribution statements for tax purposes
Additional Responsibilities:
- Partner with the Controller on audits, system upgrades, and financial report preparation
- Assist with postage duties in the mailroom when needed
- Stay informed on software updates and evolving church accounting policies
- Carry out other duties as delegated by the Controller
Qualifications
- Degree in accounting or equivalent professional experience
- Familiarity with online banking and push-pay platforms
- Solid understanding of GAAP and principles of non-profit financial accounting
- Experience with general ledger systems, reconciliations, reporting, budgeting, and closing procedures
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Competent in Microsoft Outlook and Word
- Willingness to sign and adhere to the church’s statement of faith
- Active Christian faith and a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, grounded in the authority of Scripture
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills across all levels of the organization
- Resilient and adaptable with a strong work ethic and solution-oriented mindset
- Reliable, trustworthy, and consistent in completing tasks
