CLASS TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT-CHILD DEVELOPMENT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist in providing care, supervision and learning activities to children in a classroom environment; assist with assignments, meals, play, hygiene, cleaning and various other activities to meet the needs and interests of children.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Provide children with proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance; assist the teacher with the development and implementation of classroom activities.
Assist with student practices and assignments in various subjects; assist individual and small groups of children with projects and assignments; read books to students as assigned; assist children with letter and word pronunciation and recognition.
Observe and control behavior of children in the classroom according to approved procedures; monitor children during outdoor activities as directed; assist in the assessment of student skills and progress; observe and report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials; initiate and receive telephone calls; take and relay messages.
Pick up, distribute and set up for snacks and meals as assigned; participate in the preparation and serving of food and drink items; assist children with eating activities.
Assist children with personal hygiene; clean up after meals; assist children with washing hands and faces after play times and meals as needed; assist children with toileting as needed.
Provide classroom support to the teacher by preparing and setting up work areas, decorations, posters and displays, and distributing, setting up, and collecting paper, supplies, toys, equipment and materials; set up and clean play areas before and after outdoor activities as required.
Oversee and interact with children during games, play, outings and recreational, and other group activities; oversee and assist with naptime functions as assigned.
Communicate with faculty, staff, administrators, parents and others to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns; greet and assist children and parents.
Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment such as copiers, laminators, paper cutters, computers and assigned software.
Assure the health and safety of children by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner; clean classrooms, restrooms and other facilities as assigned; perform laundry duties as required; clean and wash dishes and tables; sweep floors; pick up paper and other debris; empty waste receptacles; stock supplies.
Maintain routine records and files related to students, progress, meals, attendance and assigned activities.
Communicate with students in English and a designated second language to facilitate the learning process as assigned by the position; provide oral and written translation between teachers, parents, staff and others as required; translate notes, letters and other materials as needed.
Attend meetings and in-services as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Complete at least 48 college semester units years of study at an institution of higher education (college level)
OR
Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree
OR
Met (pass) an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Some positions in this class may be required to translate oral and written communications between English and a designated second language.
