Requirements:

The Shift Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a shift within a manufacturing or production facility. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that the plant operates safely, to the highest quality and food safety standards, efficiently, and in compliance with industry and regulatory standards.

Principal Competencies

  • Safety Leadership: Implement safety inspections, audits, and training programs to foster a safe working environment. Ensure compliance with all company, local, regional and federal safety standards and set the tone for a positive, work-safe environment.
  • Operational Oversight: Manage all aspects of plant operations including production schedules, quality control, and maintenance activities to meet production targets and maintain safety standards. Ensure that key personnel are both trained and executing their responsibilities within the company’s ERP software (NetSuite) accurately, timely, and with a sense of urgency.
  • Staff Management: Supervise and coordinate the activities of plant workers, including working with HR on hiring, training, and performance evaluations. Ensure that employees follow safety protocols and operational procedures. Directly influence the development of front-line Supervisors into future company leaders. Mentor in the areas of decision-making, conflict resolution, interdepartmental dependency, emotional intelligence, and higher-level administrative and financial aspects of the business to create a “bench” of promotable internal candidates.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Enforce compliance with federal, state, and local regulations regarding safety and environmental standards (e.g., OSHA regulations).
  • Process Improvement: Identify areas for operational improvement and implement strategies to enhance productivity, efficiency, and reduce waste. Utilize metrics and tracking tools to analyze performance and troubleshoot issues. Become an expert at Root Cause Analysis and Problem-Solving tools to eliminate the sources of downtime, quality issues, and waste.
  • Budget Management: Develop and manage portions of the shift’s budget, ensuring that operations are cost-effective while meeting quality standards.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other departments (e.g., Safety, Engineering, Quality Control, HR, Scheduling, and Maintenance) to ensure seamless operations and adherence to production goals.

Mission Critical Competencies

  • Expertise in lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other Continuous Improvement tools and/or methodologies.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to develop future leaders and internal promotional candidates through coaching, mentoring, and decision-making assistance. A strong desire and ability to teach is a must.
  • Key Functional Skills/Knowledge
  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, business management, or a related field. Candidates with directly relevant experience may have that considered in lieu of a degree.
  • A minimum of 5 years in manufacturing or production environments is usually required, with at least 1-3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in production management and operations
  • Knowledge of safety regulations (OSHA) and quality assurance practices
  • Problem-solving abilities and analytical skills
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean Manufacturing)
  • Highly collaborative — demonstrated ability to share knowledge and information at different levels of the organization, contributing to a team that is always raising the bar for excellence and innovation.
  • Ability to utilize independent judgment in establishing the accuracy and reliability of information.
  • Ability to communicate accurately, clearly, effectively, and professionally both verbally and in writing.
