Job Description
We have an opportunity for a Solar Array Design Engineer to join our team in Goleta, CA. In this role, you will report to the Design Engineering Group Manager and be part of a project team working on various tasks, including electrical and mechanical design.
Responsibilities
- Perform sizing and power analysis for PV deployable solar arrays.
- Design, layout and model electrical schematics, harnessing and circuit boards for space deployables.
- Develop and execute qualification campaigns for PV and electrical components including mechanical, thermal and radiation testing.
- Work closely with manufacturing engineering to develop and validate electrical interconnect processes such as welding and soldering.
- Collaborate with systems engineering on electrical de-rating and EEE parts lists.
- Proactively interface with multi-disciplinary team members to optimize component and system designs that meet all technical, cost and schedule requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or other related degree with 8 or more years of relevant experience.
- Experience working with design, manufacture and verification of electromechanical systems, photovoltaics, and composite structures.
- Experienced with SolidWorks PDM or CAD.
- Experienced with GD&T per ASME Y14.5 along with tolerance analysis capabilities.
- Ability to travel - an average of 10-15% travel may be required.
Desired Skills
- 10 or more years' experience in space industry, including developing, building, and testing space flight hardware, ideally deployable solar arrays.
- Self-motivated in applying engineering principles, concepts, and practices of mechanical / aerospace engineering to independently perform assignments.
- Experience with space mechanism design and aerospace guidelines such as GSFC-STD-7000A (GEVS), AIAA S-114-2005, NASA-STD-5017, MMPDS, etc.
- Experience with Thermal Desktop, NASTRAN or ANSYS is a plus.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office 365.
- Strong attention to detail with advanced verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to produce 'completed staff work'.
