Position Summary
The position requires expert mortgage underwriting and credit knowledge, exceptional management skills, consistently outstanding client service, and proven problem solving and decision-making skills. The successful candidate will have a high level of interaction with internal parties (trading, sales, IT, structured finance) and external parties (3rd party service providers, Rating Agencies).
Responsibilities and Duties
- Credit Policy
- Collaborate with Credit Policy Manager in the identification and recommendation of credit policy and underwriting guideline revisions.
- Act as the subject matter expert for internal and external parties in the accurate interpretation of Redwood, Agency and investor underwriting guidelines
- Coordinate with Compliance Officer to ensure adherence with federal and state regulatory requirements
- Manage Internal Underwriting Resources
- Provide leadership, support, guidance, motivation, and mentoring for internal underwriting resources.
- Develop and maintain operational procedures to optimize workflow efficiencies while maintaining excellent customer service
- Act as the first-level escalation point for guideline and loan program scenarios, exception requests, appraisal reviews, and other related process questions.
- Actively participate in hiring activities including recruiting, review of qualifications, and interview of candidates.
- Manage productivity to ensure performances standards are maintained including audits for Underwriting
- Participate with Business Development and Credit in the Monthly Underwriting training sessions or on as needed basis for Sellers.
- Manage 3rd Party resources
- Participate in the management of 3rd party due diligence firms to ensure quality loan reviews, acceptable service level standards, and managed costs.
- Participate in the evaluation of 3rd party services to manage loan risk and enhance productivity, including appraisal products, fraud and verification services, and credit evaluation tools.
- Rating Agency Support for Securitization
- Provide required documentation and coordinate activities for all parties requiring access to diligence results.
- Support of Process and Technology Development
- Provide recommendations for workflow efficiencies consistent with policies and process flows.
- Coordinate documentation and feedback with business analysts or project managers for development of automated work flows to support efficient, scalable operations.
Required Experience & Education
- Minimum 7 years of recent direct underwriting management experience
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree recommended
- Expert underwriting knowledge and extensive experience with Jumbo and Conforming mortgage products
- Technologically savvy, with the ability to work in varied systems. Proficiency with loan origination systems, automated underwriting engines, electronic document management and other systems.
- High attention to detail and effective problem-solving skills
- Excellent client service skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Analytical thinking ability, diplomacy and professionalism
- Occasional travel required
