This is a civilian position requiring the direct accomplishment of tasks associated with communications and record keeping, clerical support services, and emergency services. It is occasionally an emotionally demanding position in which an individual dispatcher must function as part of a cohesive work unit (patrol shift), or act independently in performing assigned tasks. While an individual in this position sometimes performs tasks under immediate and present supervision, a dispatcher/clerk must also be able to exercise independent judgment and perform tasks without supervision, especially in emergency situations.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential Functions Under the supervision of the Chief of Police perform duties associated with police, fire, EMS, and emergency government notification and communications. Perform routine filing and routing related to the department record keeping function. Perform other duties as directed or needed (training).

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Functions DescriptionDispatcher/clerks shall perform those duties currently and traditionally performed; those duties as lawfully directed by superiors, and those duties including, but not necessarily limited to the following: 1. CommunicationsDispatcher/clerks shall effectively and efficiently receive and send pertinent information for police, fire, EMS, and citizens: Via telephone. Via radio. Via handwritten and typewritten documents. Through use of computer systems. Through use of intercoms. Verbally in person. Via paging and notification systems. By use of the T.I.M.E. System. Via TDD.2. Office OccupationsDispatcher/clerks shall efficiently and effectively perform the following tasks: Make copies using copy machines. Operate adding machines. Operate postage meters and scales. Operate cash register. Type documents. Operate fax machine. Receive bonds, fines, fees, and issue receipts as necessary. Register bicycles. Maintain animal control logs. Update and maintain department logs. Maintain arrest ledger. Reload consumables (tapes, paper, cartridges, toner, etc.) for office machines. Report office machine malfunctions and deficiencies. Lock doors at time specified by department policy. Keep work area reasonably neat, clean, and organized.3. Support ServicesDispatcher/clerks shall efficiently and effectively perform the following tasks: Initiate and route police case generating documents. Initiate and route fire call documents. Initiate and route EMS call documents. Maintain up to date call schedule for primary and back-up EMS crews. Provide and coordinate radio communications for Police, Fire, EMS, and emergency government. Initiate and follow through on notification procedures for severe weather, disasters and major events. Conduct tests of emergency notification equipment regularly and report deficiencies to supervisor. Notify utility personnel of water and electrical outages and related emergencies. Notify public works of street, sidewalk, and sewer deficiencies and emergencies. Assist public and reception desk. Train new dispatcher/clerks.4. Other Duties & ResponsibilitiesPerform any additional tasks lawfully directed by superiors.Physical RequirementsPerformance of routine tasks associated with this position requires a capacity to intermittently sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift light (1 to 25 lbs) objects.Working ConditionsSome tasks performed may expose an individual to exhaust fumes, smoke, bloodborne and airborne pathogens, simple and deadly assault, and hazardous materials. Work sometimes consists of long periods of boredom interrupted by short but intense periods of extreme emotional stress. Equipment Used in Performance of Job TasksSpecialized equipment includes radios, microcomputers, typewriters, pens, pencils, tape recorders, TDD, cash register, and telephones. RemovalThe major reasons for job removal are: Economic conditions that cause reductions in the work force. The incumbent's inability to attend regularly to work. The incumbent's failure to competently perform the tasks, both critical and routine, associated with this position. The incumbent's failure to: Support, and behave according to, the Department Mission. Uphold the civilian Oath of Office Behave in a manner consistent with the civilian Code of Ethics. Comply with original conditions of employment. Avoid accrual of atypical amounts of supervisory corrective intervention, direction, counseling, discipline and/or remedial training time.
