Physical therapists (PT) in an outpatient surgical center are specialists and experts who provide treatment or rehabilitation to patients with injuries/surgical procedure recovery affecting the musculoskeletal system, which covers the muscles, joints, bones, ligaments, and tendons. The physical therapist is part of the center’s interdisciplinary team and assists in providing individualized patient plans of care, pre- and post-op education and post-operative recovery assessment and evaluation of discharge readiness. This role is specific to seeing patients following their total knee or hip replacement. This position is a PRN position.

Duties, Responsibilities, Competencies
- Performs evaluations based on the need of each patient, specific program guideline, and recommendation/order from physicians and provides treatment/education to patients with pre- and post-op orthopedic surgical procedures for optimal outcomes.
- Assesses patient and family/coach needs to provide quality care to assigned patients.
- Evaluates patient’s response and intervenes appropriately for optimal outcomes.
- Demonstrates ability to clearly communicate instructions to co-workers, patient and family and appropriately answers questions.
- Appropriately adapts and assists during rapidly changing pace and manages resources as needed to maintain patient flow.
- Develops, discusses, and communicates a realistic problem list (plan of care) for each patient, in collaboration with each patient, family, and significant other with the goal to address all identified needs.
- Demonstrates communication and time management skills necessary to organize care and timing of 3-10 therapy sessions based on patient readiness for discharge.
- Able to provide detailed documentation of pertinent evaluation findings and/or concerns to ensure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team.
- Maintains current knowledge, certification, and licensure. Pursues professional growth and development.
- Demonstrates leadership behaviors in a professional manner.
- Performs selected duties as delegated by the DON or others in authority.
- Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, center/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
- Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the center, as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.
- Assists in facility annual staff training regarding post-surgical patient ambulation, ergonomics regarding patient and employee safety.
- Assumes other duties as assigned.
Requirements Required
- Education Minimum: Must possess a current (state) license as a Physical Therapist.
- A minimum of two years of physical therapy experience.
- Required Licenses/Certifications: Current PT license. BLS certification required. Preferred:
- ASC or acute hospital experience
- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, patients, physicians and the general public.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Computer Skills: Job requires specialized computer skills. Must be adept at using MS Word, communicate by e-mail and use EMR software.
- Strong ability to apply evidence-based research, professional literature, and continuing education materials in collaboration with the physician to make the right decision on the patient’s treatment plan.
- Special Requirements: Must be able to work variable hours and be flexible to meet the needs of the center’s daily surgery schedule.

- The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to lift patients, assist a patient that is falling, and carry heavy medical equipment.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee is frequently required to attend to patients and escort them to and from patient care areas, often being leaned on for support. Upper body strength, for lifting or helping patients out of bed and bath, is also a must.
