Description

GENERAL SUMMARY

Supports the professional clinical staff by providing direct patient care and performing studies and tests as assigned by the physician or RN. These duties may vary by shift or may be unit-specific. Serves the population from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

Essential Functions

  • Assists O.R. staff in a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, positioning and moving patients, locating, moving and set-up of equipment and supplies, preparing rooms, and opening sterile supplies.
  • Assist with such tasks as patient transport when appropriate.
  • Orders and ensures availability of supplies as assigned.
  • Perform assigned tasks to ensure a clean and orderly environment throughout the department.
  • Communicate appropriately with staff, physicians, patients and families.
  • Obtains and returns x-rays.
  • Delivers specimens to Lab; obtains blood from Blood Bank.
  • Complies with OSHA/JCAHO and other guidelines and policies.
  • Sets up trauma room
  • Performs sterilization & monitoring tests.
  • Pulls and utilizes preference cards.

Marginal Functions

  • Participates in departmental Performance Improvement activities.
  • Attends departmental meetings and in-services.
  • Participates in orientation of new employees.
  • Assists other team members (Environmental Services Workers, etc.) as necessary.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in medical setting preferred.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English language.
  • Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire. The acceptable credentialing body is the American Heart Association
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: (Constant = 67-100% of workday, Frequent = 34-66% of workday, Occasional = 33% or less of workday)

CONSTANT

  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances such as in transporting patients to their rooms or ancillary departments.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to co-workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal range. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.

FREQUENT

  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arms in any direction such as in reaching for IV bags and monitor cables and controls and retrieving supplies from cabinets.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine to assist patients, such as to and from a wheelchair or bed.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time when assisting the nursing or medical staff, when performing EKG testing and phlebotomy.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward, such as transporting patients by cart or wheelchair.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion, such as in pulling or adjusting a patient on a stretcher or assisting the flight team with off-loading a patient from the helicopter.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles. This activity would be used to move patients from an EMS stretcher to an Emergency Department cart.

OCCASIONAL

  • Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers) when performing phlebotomy or use of a keyboard.

Physical Demand Requirements

If a patient is unable to function independently, a mechanical/assistive device and/or additional personnel must be utilized. If an object requires lifting > 50 lbs., additional equipment/personnel must also be utilized.

Heavy work: Exerting up to 65 lbs. push/pull (force to move frequently, and lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, and lifting up to 40 lbs. frequently, and lifting up to 20 lbs. constantly, to move patient and/or objects.

Visual Acuity Requirements

  • Computer terminal, reading, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines (including inspection), using measuring devices, assembly of parts at distances close to the eyes.

Intellectual/Emotional Requirements

  • Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with emergent, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations, or situation in which working speed and sustained attention are vital aspects of the job.
  • Adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, patients and visitors and satisfactory job performance despite the stress of a hospital work environment.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Adaptability to situations requiring the precise attainment of set limits, tolerances or standards.
  • Ability to function with minimal direction.

Equipment/Tools

  • Standard medical and nursing equipment, special equipment or office equipment found in the assigned area.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Employees in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, therefore, are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with all its specifications for preventing contact with the above materials. Employees in this job classification have also been identified as having the likelihood of exposure to sharps, glass containers and hazardous chemicals.
  • The worker is subject to noise from various types of surgical equipment.
  • The worker is subject to hazards from electrical equipment, mechanical parts, lasers, etc.
  • The worker is subject to gases and fumes (example: bone cement).
  • The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
