A Brief Overview
Responsible for assisting nursing staff in the care of patients as determined by skills training and validation in accordance with established policies and procedures; maintaining equipment and supplies. Performs all activities under direct supervision of Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
What you will do
- Shadows the Registered Nurse or Practical Nurse. * Performs duties applicable to assigned unit or area, except invasive procedures, administration of medications, IV’s and blood/blood products. * Performs diagnostic measurements as determined by skills training and validation. * Performs skills as outlined on Skill Checklist for Practical Nurse Apprentice including knowledge and behaviors, to meet age-specific patient needs.
- Reviews nursing care plans with nurse. * Assists with hourly patient rounding as assigned by the nurse manager, PCC, or charge nurse.
- Preforms clerical duties as it relates to admissions, discharges, and maintenance of patient and medical record, and supplies. * Takes and records patient vital signs. Takes and records temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respiration. * Observes and reports patient’s response to interventions/treatment. Completes all documentation requirements in a timely manner.
- Assists with activities of daily living. * Utilizes AIDET principles when communicating with patients, families, and team members. * Assists with patient care and feeding patients and may act as a patient sitter.
- Participates in patient care needs with transporting, therapy and educational needs. * Works within isolation precautions. * Assists in pre/post procedural care as delegated. * Assists with wound care and applying dressings and bandages. * Assists with transferring, ambulating and transportation of patients.
Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in an approved practical nursing program. Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the adult and/or geriatric patient population as specialty assignment dictates. Required
- Must provide proof of continuous enrollment in an approved practical nursing program to maintain employment. Required
- Current CPR/BLS certification Required
- Experience in patient care or equivalent on-the-job training as obtained through participation in an approved practical nursing program. Required
