What are the responsibilities and job description for the Peer Specialist position at Rehabilitation Support Services, Inc.?
The RSS and Albany County Re-Entry Task Force is looking for a part-time Peer Specialist for 20 hours weekly. Preferred hours are Tues-Thur 8AM-3:30 PM, some flexibility is possible. High school diploma or equivalent and valid NYS driver's license are required.
Re-Entry is a State funded, voluntary program that assists men and women transition back into the community from State incarceration. Re-Entry works closely with NYS Parole and NYS DOCCS. Re-Entry aims to reduce recidivism by assisting with obtaining documentation for their NYS ID, employment, linkage to providers, DSS/SSA navigation, and advocating with community service providers.
The peer specialist role is an important part of Re-Entry as they will assist clients at the DMV and DSS along with assisting Re-Enry staff prepare for in-house programs/events that are provided. Along with assisting clients, the peer specialist must feel comfortable going to the NYS Parole office, Albany County Department of Mental Health, various correctional facilities in NYS, and participate in trainings provided by Division of Criminal Justice Services.
Lived experience in Re-Entry is preferred. Appropriate self-disclosure may be part of the position as well. The peer will be trained and required to enter notes into the county’s database, and there may be other tasks expected of the peer to help with the day-to-day functioning of Re-Entry (i.e. making copies, filing, intakes, etc.). The ideal applicant will be someone who communicates well, set professional boundaries, is willing to learn, and be able to step in to provide assistance.
