Overview of Responsibilities
• Knowledge Acquisition: Provide a comprehensive understanding of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, and healthcare regulations to ensure students are well-prepared for real-world scenarios. • Hands-on Skill Development: Prepare students with essential patient care, medical administration, and clinical procedures through hands-on experiences.• Certification Preparation: Prepare students for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) examination to enhance their employability and professional credibility in the healthcare field.• Foundation for Further Education: Provide opportunities for students to earn stackable credentials such as the Ivy Tech Health Care Specialist Technical Certificate, making it easier to transition into college for advanced degrees in health care.
Education/Experience
- Eligibility to apply for the Medical Assistant Apprenticeship is only open to students who have successfully completed the Principles of Health Science, Medical Terminology, and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant course work.
- Second-year enrollment criteria and/or participation in the Medical Apprenticeship, at a minimum, requires the following—The Student:
- Maintained a school attendance rate of at least 90% with excused absences not counted against the student’s attendance rating.
- Earned a combined “C” average in the Principles, Concentrator A, and Concentrator B courses along with earning dual credit in CPR-Basic Life Support, Medical Terminology, and CCMA Workforce Development Prep.
- Earned the provisional Certified Clinical Medical Assistant credential.
- Demonstrated a professional work ethic through his or her attitude, speech, dress, and behaviors during the first year of the CTE pathway.
- CTE instructors may include additional eligibility requirements for admission to the second year of the Medical Assistant Program and apprenticeship based on employer (Reid Health) hiring policies.
- CTE instructors will review first-year students’ eligibility for application/participation in the MA Apprenticeship program during the second semester based on the criteria outlined above. This may/will be done in coordination with the employer partner (Reid Health). Students will be notified/informed of their selection for the apprenticeship or a work-based learning experience before the end of their junior year.
