Position Summary
The Adult Education Instructor is responsible for providing adult literacy, family literacy, workplace education, basic skills, community education, and GED preparatory instruction as assigned.
Salary Commensurate with education and experience according to ACCS Board of Trustees Salary Schedule D3. (This is a grant-funded position. Continued employment is dependent on continued funding.)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in the planning of effective long-range goals for the Adult Education program.
- Demonstrate effective people skills, communication skills, and work ethic (i.e. preparation and punctuality).
- Understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of a community and technical college.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and various situations in a calm and professional manner.
- Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines.
- Commitment to teaching and learning, where recent high school graduates, adult students, and non-traditional students are involved.
- Assist students with educational and career decisions.
- Participate in the College’s recruiting program.
- Coordinate with Adult Education and other College personnel on the College’s Adult Education graduation ceremony.
- Research “best practices” in Adult Education and disseminate the information to Adult Education program faculty and staff.
- Perform duties at alternate sites within the College’s Adult Education Service area when needed.
- Perform duties related to program orientation sessions including assessment and class assignments.
- Perform duties assisting other instructors with technology applications.
- Maintain compliance with college and program related accreditation and certification standards.
- Attend in-service, staff meetings, and state training professional development.
- Ability to work outside regular working hours and/or various class times such as needed (morning, afternoon, evening, weekday, weekend).
- Retain and submit documentation as requested to support accreditation efforts.
- Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with the prevailing policy.
- Submit timely and accurate Adult Education National Reporting System (NRS) records.
- Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, financial, and personnel records, and submit them according to the deadlines announced.
- Participate in Adult Education (AE) discussions and meetings about curriculum, teaching-learning techniques, and teaching materials.
- Participate in staff, division, and committee meetings as assigned.
- Actively participate in division/college committees and campus activities.
- Demonstrate ethical behavior, loyalty, honesty, and integrity, both on and off the campus.
- Maintain a high level of competence and expertise in the area of Adult Education.
- Incorporate current teaching techniques, subject area developments, and current technology into the Adult Education program design.
- Provide classroom instruction in accordance with approved state requirements.
- Inform students concerning course requirements, evaluation procedures, attendance requirements, and academic progress.
- Other duties as assigned by the President, Executive Director of Workforce Development and/or Director of Adult Education.

- Minimum of a Bachelors Degree from a regionally accredited institution required.
- Minimum of two (2) years teaching experience in elementary education or above, required.
- Evidence of effective human relations skills and ability to relate to a variety of internal and external constituencies, required.
- Teaching experience in adult education at a postsecondary institution.
- Excellent oral, auditory, and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and other employees.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of multi-media and instructional technology.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is equivalent to 7 hours per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama.
