At Relational Excellence, LLC, our Clinical Preceptorship Program is a profound opportunity for current Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) students to immerse themselves in a high-quality clinical experience. During the preceptorship, students will embark on a transformative journey, working closely with our esteemed Medical Director, Monaa Walton, CRNP, PMHNP. Through personalized guidance and mentorship, this close collaboration ensures that students develop the essential clinical knowledge and assessment skills needed to deliver exceptional mental health care and carve their path to success in the professional arena.
For nursing students, clinical practicums serve as a vital link between academic theory and real-life healthcare scenarios, shaping them into competent and compassionate practitioners. These immersive experiences enable students to translate their classroom learning into hands-on clinical practice while fostering the development of valuable skills. Our program not only offers practical training but also provides a unique opportunity for students to gain insights from experienced practitioners, equipping them with the necessary skills to thrive in their future careers in the mental health care sector.

CLINICAL SKILLS OFFERED FOR STUDENTS: (This is not an exhaustive list but includes highlights.)
Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation Skills In:
- Recognizing clinical signs and symptoms of psychiatric illness
- Performing and interpreting a comprehensive and/or interval history and physical examination (including laboratory and diagnostic studies)
- Performing and interpreting a functional assessment (activities of daily living, occupational, social, leisure, educational).
Diagnostic Reasoning Skills In:
- Demonstrate knowledge of psychopathology of mental illnesses through discussion for different age groups and mental illnesses
- Differentiating between normal/abnormal age-related physiological and psychological symptoms/changes
- Formulating diagnoses according to DSM 5 based on assessment data
Pharmacotherapeutic Skills In:
- Selecting appropriate evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for medication plan (e.g., risk/benefit, patient preference, developmental considerations, financial considerations, the process of informed consent, symptom management)
- Documenting (e.g., adverse reaction, the patient response, changes to the plan of care)
Psychotherapeutic Treatment Planning:
- Selecting appropriate evidence based clinical practice guidelines for psychotherapeutic plan (e.g., risk/benefit, patient preference, developmental considerations, financial, the process of informed consent, symptom management, modality appropriate for situation)
- Provide psychoeducation to individuals and groups
- Recognizes concepts of therapeutic modalities across the lifespan
Self-Assessment Skills:
- Selecting appropriate evidence based clinical practice guidelines for psychotherapeutic plan (e.g., risk/benefit, patient preference, developmental considerations, financial, the process of informed consent, symptom management, modality appropriate for situation)
- Recognizes concepts of therapeutic modalities across the lifespan
Professional Skills:
- Maintains professional boundaries and therapeutic relationships with clients and staff.
- Identifies ethical and legal dilemmas with possible resolutions
- Demonstrates non-judgmental practice approach and empathy
Selecting and Implementing Appropriate Screening Instrument(s), Interpreting Results, & Making Recommendations/Referrals:
- Demonstrates selecting the correct screening instrument appropriate for the clinical situation
- Develops an appropriate plan of care based upon screening instruments response
ROLE OF THE PRECEPTOR:
• Guides, directs, mentors, and supports the student to facilitate the achievement of practicum learning objectives.
• Orients the student to the practicum site, facility, personnel, policies, and procedures.
• Provides opportunities for role analysis, as well as the application of skills and knowledge.
• Supervises the student, which encompasses instruction, monitoring, mentoring, evaluation, supervision, and feedback.
• Provides ongoing feedback about student performance and progress in meeting practicum goals and objectives.
• Collaborates with the faculty instructor to ensure the student is meeting practicum learning objectives.
• Completes video conference meetings with the faculty instructor to discuss the student's practicum experience and performance.
• Signs off on practicum time logs in university preferred method to verify the completion of required practicum hours.
• Completes a midterm and final evaluation in Meditrek to assess and evaluate the student's performance du ing practicum.
RELATIONAL EXCELLENCE PRECEPTOR:
- Is currently licensed in the state where practicum will occur with an active and unencumbered I license.
- Has a minimum of one year of postgraduate experience and a current job role relevant to the specialization.
- Is a permanent employee of the facility/site where the practicum will take place.
- Will complete evaluations to assess the student's work during practicum and verify practicum hours by signing time logs.
- Will complete video conference meetings with the student's university faculty to assess the student's performance during practicum.
- Agree to engage in a preceptor-to-student ratio of 1:1 for direct student supervision at any given time.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS
- Will be conducted in our Glen Burnie, MD location
- Preceptorship Hours: Monday/Tuesday: 9am to 3:30pm and Fridays 9am to 1pm. Additional times will/can be discussed during the interview process
