What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Technician position at Remet Corporation?
JOB PURPOSE:
- Perform all required testing of customer samples and submit report on findings to Laboratory and/or QEHS Manager and/or customer in a timely and thorough manner. Must be familiar with all REMET lab equipment and its operation. Perform some routine maintenance and in-house calibrations on all the equipment. Assist in performing research and development projects as directed by the Plant Manager.
KEY RESULT AREAS:
- Responsible for performing testing on incoming customer samples. This includes tests on waxes and raw materials.
- Perform research and development projects for different wax products. This usually consists of making blends and preparing specimens to properly characterize their properties.
- Issue technical service reports based on test results. Include suggested corrective action when appropriate.
- Attain a working knowledge of proper operation, calibration, and routine maintenance of all laboratory equipment.
- Perform quality control testing for incoming raw materials.
- Prepare customer lists and graphs for monthly technical report.
- Calibrates lab equipment in accordance with ISO requirements.
- Other duties as assigned by the Plant Manager.
- Maintain laboratory housekeeping and organization and follow safe practices.
- Follow all applicable ISO procedures and work instructions to ensure compliance with the documented Quality System.
- Must be able to create, monitor and analyze Certificate of Analysis based on product specifications and customer requirements.
- Must be able to understand and create finished good SDS’ in current platform.
- Manage and reduce the quality hold and rework inventory.
- Maintain the QC Inbox to ensure customer compliance.
- Stay current on all required safety training and testing not limited to; powered walkie, DOT Hazmat training, RCRA training, and respiratory FIT Testing.
- Understand and perform Weekly Hazardous Waste Area Inspections.
- Able to perform required testing procedures and protocols at other REMET laboratories.
MAIN WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal
- Report intermediate test results and any issues with samples, R&D projects, to the Plant Production Manager or requestor.
- Reports all results, problem areas, personal time (vacation/sick days), and any other lab related items to Laboratory and/or QEHS Manager.
- Informs sales personnel of pertinent lab results, as necessary, in order to maintain good customer relationships.
External
Maintain good communication with all Remet customers and suppliers.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Physical Functions:
- Employee must be able to pass the OSHA required respirator FIT testing and training.
- Individual must be able to lift 10 to 50 pounds approximately10 to 30 times per day with additional lifting of lighter weights throughout the day.
- Lifting would include “high lifting” which means raising or lowering of bags or pails ranging up to 50 pounds above waist and shoulder level in a vertical direction and “low lifting” which means raising or lowering containers of about 50 pounds up to waist level in a vertical direction.
- Work would also include twisting at the waist, stooping crouching and bending the body forward at the waist.
- Daily duties would also include pushing (Sweeping) and reaching above their heads.
- Individual must be able to operate a pallet jack.
- All work must be done by a person capable of working on their feet, walking, and moving about for at a minimum of 4-hours a day.
- Individual must be able to work in environments varying in temperatures depending upon the climate of the area.
Mental Functions:
- Individual must be able to follow ASTM testing procedures to ensure consistent results.
- Individual must be diligent and competent in handling hazardous material products.
- Individual must be able read and write in English.
- Employees in this role must be able to count and perform mathematical calculations.
- Employees in this role must be able to read and operate inspection and measurement equipment.
- Individual must be able to understand the customary documentation utilized in this position such as Batch Tickets, labels, safety data sheets (SDS)
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS
- The Laboratory Technician position requires an awareness of the Company's established policies, rules, regulations, and procedures as they relate to employment, safety and health, ISO 9001, ASTM, and housekeeping. The jobholder must have product knowledge and be proficient in all the manufacturing and testing procedures. The jobholder must also possess the ability to operate all required equipment and processes.
- Reasoning Ability – Must be capable of making good decisions relevant to job requirements and referring higher level decisions to a manager.
- Education and/or Experience – Minimum of an A.A.S. or equivalent experience in engineering or science is required. A basic knowledge of wax testing and the ability to compile and interpret data is an asset. Also, the capability of communicating technical skills and information to customers in a comprehensive manner is valuable. Must retain a solid understanding of Hazardous chemicals and Hazardous Waste training.
- Language Skills – Must possess the ability to read and write in the English language.
- Mathematical Skills – Basic math skills are required (e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) Must be able to read a ruler, caliper, and micrometer.
- The position requires good analytical and laboratory practices as well as oral and written communication skills.
- Must follow all safety and quality rules in effect and meet all productivity requirements of the position.
