Description

This position serves as head of the Reno Sparks Convention Center and assumes total management responsibility for the administration, operation and maintenance of the Convention Center facilities, solicitation/marketing and contracting of show activities, establishing/maintaining show client relationships, overseeing event management and services, assuring adequate security is provided for these events, and performance of daily and special administrative tasks.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains a competent, professional, well-trained, and motivated facility services staff that provides a positive and beneficial facility environment for the successful staging of show activities. This will be accomplished by hiring, training, developing, coaching, and evaluating the performance of the staff.
  • Provides timely and appropriate feedback to staff to ensure consistent, high-performance standards are maintained and achieved. 
  • Develops objectives related to the effective operation, preventive maintenance, and repair of the Convention Center, and develops practical and relevant short-term plans to accomplish these objectives.  Assures the implementation of these plans.
  • Assures the effectiveness of the preventive maintenance of the Convention Center.  Ensures a continuing process of adjusting the preventive maintenance program considering the results of the evaluation or to consider changed circumstances.  Assures first line supervisors have developed and implemented preventive maintenance programs to prevent the deterioration of the facility.
  • Prepares the annual budget for the Convention Center ensuring the budget adequately documents the amount and level of services to be provided.  Exercises control over the authorized budget to keep expenditures within the limits set.
  • Assures that events scheduled for the Convention Center are properly set up, staffed, and struck by properly scheduling tasks in advance and by inspecting the facilities prior to, during, and after the events. Promptly notes deficiencies, and issues work orders to first line supervisors to correct these conditions.
  • Assures security services preserve order, protect life and property, and enforce the rules and regulations of the RSCVA. 
  • Documents and regularly updates the Convention Center's security service needs and formulates and monitors goals, objectives, plans, and policies for adequately meeting these needs considering risk levels, legal mandates, and current and future costs. Communicates these goals, objectives, plans, and policies to department personnel, the Executive Director of Facilities Operations, and clients.
  • Provides daily interface and coordination with Convention Center and RSCVA sales staff to maximize long-term event bookings including assistance on contract negotiation and execution of lease agreements.
  • Maintains a positive and professional image and builds an effective rapport with clients or potential clients.
  • Provides daily interface, coordination, and planning with all event-related service contractors (e.g., show decorator, transportation agency, etc.) to ensure comprehensive and effective production and staging of contracted shows.
  • Keeps the Executive Director of Facilities Operations informed in a timely fashion on issues requiring their input or consent. 
  • Generates a monthly performance report for the Executive Director of Facilities Operations detailing departmental workload and work activities.  Maintains the records necessary for such a report.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other staff of the RSCVA and external groups.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications


JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum five years’ progressively responsible experience in the management and operation of large event facilities.
  • Knowledge of the capacity and capabilities of the Reno Sparks Convention Center.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct the activities of the Reno Sparks Convention Center.
  • Knowledge of set-up and tear down requirements for concerts, and events, operations and management practices.
  • Knowledgeable in current industry practices and procedures for space conversion, maintenance and cleaning activities including the proper and safe use of facility equipment, capital systems, and materials.
  • Knowledgeable in recent developments, current literature, and sources of information regarding convention center administration.
  • Knowledge of convention center administration and operational practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety requirements for public assembly, and fire and safety regulations.
  • Knowledgeable in the rules and regulations relating to public health and safety in large building facilities.
  • Knowledge of budgeting principles and practices, contract administration, leasing concessions, rental agreements, language, terms, and legal concepts.
  • Must be familiar with various organizational functions, principles of supervision, personnel practices and techniques, including review techniques, and training methods.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills and software programs including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong written and oral communication/presentation skills with the ability to effectively communicate with staff, superiors, visitors, and vendors.
  • Strong media and public relations skills needed.
  • Must be highly motivated and self-directed, detail oriented, meet established deadlines, and professional in performance of duties.
  • Effective negotiation skills.
  • Ability to develop effective written policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Possess a valid Nevada Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend (at neck and waist), twist, reach above & below shoulder level as needed during the shift, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Frequently required to talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May be exposed to various temperatures inside and outside the building, airborne particles, fumes, and chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet while in the office, or moderately noisy when in the field.
