Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Head Start Health/Safety Nutrition Advocate, transport Head Start children to and from school of attendance, and for other transportation needs as deemed necessary by managers. Transportation of students abides by all public safety rules and laws as well as established internal and Department procedures. Assists in maintaining a safe and sanitary environment, assists in the care and education of students; and responsible for understanding and implementing Head Start Performance Standards, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Policies and Procedures, Indian Health Services Tribal Health and Safety Code, and Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines. Performs Head Start program safety inspections and trains staff on safety policies and procedures.
Duties:
· Maintains bus operational safety by adhering to all child transportation regulations.
· Maintains and updates transportation records, policies, and procedures as required by Federal, State and/or Tribal regulations.
· Trains staff on safety policies and procedures.
· Inspects bus daily, during pre and post safety checks, and performs periodic services as needed: including but not limited to checking the brakes, tires, mirrors, seats, emergency doors, heaters, defroster, lights, flashers, and emergency equipment and schedules vehicle for regular inspection and maintenance through the RSIC Public Works Department.
· Submits monthly written reports to the Head Start Manager.
· Responsible for safe pickup and delivery of Head Start children to and from the Hungry Valley Head Start Center; stays on planned route, except in cases of law enforcement rerouting or road conditions dictate change of plans for safe delivery of students.
· Trains the bus monitor, all staff, and volunteers who serve as bus monitors in all aspects involved in the maintenance, operation and safety of the bus, including but not limited to monitoring and supervising students’ conduct and behavior while on the bus, assisting students on and off the bus, and assisting in emergency situations.
· Provides annual training to children, parents, staff, and monitors on bus rules, i.e., seating requirements, exit and emergencies, bus routes, schedules, etc.
· Participates in mandatory Education Department training sessions, and other meetings when requested.
· Works effectively in a team environment and actively participates in joint problem solving; willingly cooperates with staff, students, and parents listening attentively to others; asks clarifying questions to gain a better understanding of the other person’s views and underlying assumptions, following rules, regulations, and policies; positively contributes to implementing changes.
· Deals with issues directly, in a respectful and timely manner. Focuses on resolving the issue while not criticizing the person.
· Employee is required regularly to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret information, policies, regulations; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret people and situations effectively; work under intensive deadlines; and interact with management, administrators, staff, teachers, parents, family members, students, and others encountered during work.
· Communicate on a regular basis verbally, electronically and in writing to management staff regarding program issues including concerns and recommendations, related to but not limited to children, families, staff, and program.
· Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
· Must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age at time of hire and be eligible for participation in the RSIC Vehicle Insurance Program.
· Must possess a valid State of Nevada Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement and “S” endorsement
· Have a DMV print out with a good driving record submitted prior to date of hire.
· Must understand policies, regulations, and established safety guidelines. Must have experience writing and updating policies.
· Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; regularly required to stand, walk and sit for periods of time, communicate and hear both in person and by telephone; also, regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl, climb or balance and lift to 50 pounds.
· Able to adhere to strict confidentiality policies of personal information about children, families, and staff.
· Able to work with people from diverse cultures, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds with knowledge of Tribal community and sensitivity to Native American needs.
· Must satisfactorily pass an annual physical examination and TB screening
· Must possess and maintain infant, child, and adult CPR certification, First Aid certification, and a Food Handler’s Certification within three (3) months from date of hire and each year thereafter.
· Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening and background checks
Please note hiring preference is given to qualified members of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony followed by members of other federally recognized tribes.
Must pass and comply with the HR Policy 164.905- P.L. 101-630 Background check.
Reno-Sparks Indian Colony requires a designated candidate to successfully complete a pre-employment criminal background check, drug screen, and confirmation of references.
