Position Summary:
The Director of Estimating is responsible for leading and developing the estimating department, implementing best practices, and improving efficiencies within the company. This role requires a strategic leader with extensive experience in commercial estimating, preferably within mid-sized general contractors ($100M-$500M), who can build and manage a high-performing estimating team. The successful candidate will bring a strong background in process development, optimization, and enforcement, along with exceptional leadership and team development skills.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Lead the estimating department, developing strategies to improve accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness
- Oversee and manage the preparation of detailed and competitive cost estimates for commercial construction projects
- Develop, implement, and refine best practices in estimating, ensuring standardization across projects
- Collaborate with project managers, sales teams, and leadership to align estimates with business objectives
- Work closely with overseas estimating and takeoff teams, optimizing workflows and integrating their support into the department’s operations
- Train and mentor estimators to enhance their technical expertise and industry knowledge
- Analyze market trends, labor costs, and material pricing to provide accurate and up-to-date estimates
- Review historical project data to identify cost-saving opportunities and improve estimating accuracy
- Ensure compliance with company policies, industry regulations, and contractual obligations
- Maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and industry partners to obtain competitive pricing and ensure quality workmanship
- Participate in client presentations and negotiations as needed
Qualifications:
- 7-10 years of commercial estimating experience, preferably with a mid-sized general contractor ($100M-$500M)
- Prior experience as a Manager or Director of Estimating in a commercial contracting environment
- Proven track record of leading and managing an estimating team
- Experience working with overseas estimating and takeoff teams is preferred
- Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills
- Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities
