This position provides patient care of a technical nature under supervision of a licensed nurse. Incumbent performs multiple functions as a Surgical Technologist and performs Clerical Duties to support in the day-to-day operations of OB Services Department.
Incumbent is responsible for supplying the Labor and Delivery Surgical Suite with the proper supplies, equipment, and instrumentation that’s needed for a specific surgical procedure.
During the procedure the primary responsibilities of the Technologist is to maintain the sterility of the surgical field, to
anticipate the needs of the surgeons, adapt to changes in the surgical procedure as needed (such as C/Section to
Hysterectomy), passing instruments in a timely fashion. Under direct supervision of the Surgeon the Technologist may be asked to perform the following duties such as, but not limited to, sponge or suction, hold retractors or instruments placed by the surgeons, applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, irrigation to the operative sight, cut suture material, connect drains to the suction apparatus, apply dressings to the wound.
Once the procedure is completed it is the responsibility of the Technologist to care for the Instrumentation & equipment and prepare for the following case.
When acting as the second assisting Technologist he/she may perform all the duties listed above with the direct supervision of the surgeon.
This position will provide any assistance needed to expedite the room turnover thereby, providing optimum customer service to the surgeon, patient, anesthesiologist, and co-workers.
Incumbent is also responsible for supplying the Labor and Delivery PACU, Labor/Delivery/Recovery rooms (LDRs) Antepartum rooms, and Labor Assessment Department (LDA) with the proper supplies, equipment, and instrumentation needed for out-patients, Antepartum patients, and labor patients. When available the Individual will assist with deliveries. Under direct supervision of the Nurse or Physician, the Technologist may be asked to (but not limited to) provide assistance to the L&D Nurse and OB Physician during delivery by setting up the delivery instrument table using aseptic technique, positioning the patient as directed by the patient’s nurse for pushing and delivery, hold retractors or instruments placed by the physician, obtain extra needed supplies, and fill out baby bands.
Once the procedure is completed the Technologist may be asked to assist with cleaning and repositioning of patient. The Tech is responsible for the instrumentation, equipment and restocking of the room.
Incumbent is responsible for the pre-processing of instrumentation and equipment requiring sterilization and /or high level disinfection.
The Clerical Duties may include (but not limited to) unit receptionist, coordinates with Charge Nurse the placement of patients presenting for care, use of computer and telephone, entering patient charges, scheduling patients for diagnostic testing as requested by physicians, and maintains an orderly and efficient desk.
**If candidate is not a Certified Surgical Technologist or has not had formal hospital training and experience as a
Surgical Technologist then the individual will need to successfully complete a trainee position in which the
incumbent will be provided with the training and education to learn the skills necessary to perform the duties of
a Surgical Technologist for Labor and Delivery.
· Trainee will attend formal classes and after successfully completing these classes will be assigned a preceptor to continue their practical training in the OB/OR setting and on the labor floor.
· The Trainee works under the direction of a preceptor to develop surgical skills and pass milestones in training for surgical services of the OB patient as set forth by the OB/OR Supervisor, educator , and
preceptor. The trainee position is not to exceed 6 months from the training start date. |
